Huế, Việt Nam

Huế, located on the banks of the Perfume River in Central Vietnam, is home to some 350,000 people. As the site of the Nguyễn dynasty palace, it served as Vietnam's capital until 1945. During the Vietnam war, the city saw fierce fighting, with Communist forces holed up in the imperial citadel for several weeks following the Tet Offensive. The Communists were defeated only after intense street-by-street fighting, leaving much of the city in ruins. Since its designation as a UNESCO site in 1993, the imperial capital has since been largely restored. Despite a laid-back, sleepy atmosphere that belies its size, Huế is famous for its cuisine, eclectic architecture, arts scene, and annual summer festival.

Very nice, I was in Hue in April of this year and saw some of the same things as you did.

Did you take the beautiful train ride to Da Nanag?

Very interesting! Thanks. I remember watching the aftermath of the Tet Offensive on the Sunday Evening News. I was just a young child, but it definitely left an impression on me. I naively thought war was fought on open fields by professional soldiers, kind of like a bloody football game. It left me feeling much less secure in my home and neighborhood.

I always like to see photos of SE Asia. It is very rare to view photos of SE Asian cities that are not tourist magnets. I like the lighting of the bridge. Thank you for sharing.

Sweet thread. It looks like a neat place. All those people in the hammocks have the right idea.

Cool stuff

A friend of mine was arrested while on vacation in Vietnam on some bs charges. He ended up extending his vacation an extra three months Needless to say it was not a pleasant experience and not at all like spending some time in a county jail.
