Took a gander at the "Shootout" this afternoon; took a bunch of photos with my 50D (won't be able to upload them until later though), but loved this one I took randomly with my phone on the way out.

Caught some of the "Shootout" eliminations today. Just had my "casual" camera with a 28mm lens on. I'll be back tomorrow with slightly better equipment.

Tyler Roth, a Crashed Ice veteran who participated in the elimination round, said he has never seen such a crowd at the warm-up events.

“This is awesome,” he said, shortly after qualifying for Saturday’s final. “This is the most people I’ve seen come to watch an elimination round. The people here love it, it’s really great.”

Jasper and downtown was PACKED, great to see.

Checked it all out, crazy course.

Was disappointed that the beer garden was not open and limited food options, today will be different though.

Heading down later today after some patio action.

Fantastic night- is this an event we might see back again? really lit up the downtown in a way i haven't seen - well - ever? only issues i saw were what seemed to be a lack of food and beverage choices - most of the local establishments had long line ups - great problem to have, don't get me wrong... but wondered we didn't see more food trucks on the square... anyway great night downtown.

Likely yes, every couple of years.

Definitely need more food and Bev options and an outdoor beer garden.

It's happening!

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmont...mber-1.3086602

Quote:
Downtown Edmonton will host outdoor Santa Claus parade in November

Better watch out, don't cry or pout … because Santa Claus is definitely coming to town — six months from now.

And he's planning to be outside.

Edmonton's first Santa Parade of Lights will be held outdoors and downtown this coming November.

RWE Events is organizing the parade.

They wanted to get the word out in plenty of time, which was why they were talking about winter on a sunny and sultry spring day.

"This parade is less than six months away, said Dean Heuman, vice-president of RWE Events. "We need entries. We need community groups and people who want to come and join us. And we need sponsors to help us make this happen."

Organizers are looking to have about 30 entries maximum, Heuman said, to keep the parade to about an hour.

The route will start at Jasper Avenue and 99th Street and finish there as well, after circling Sir Winston Churchill Square.

Coun. Scott McKeen said an outdoor parade fits perfect with Edmonton's winter-city strategy, which is intended to get people to embrace the season rather than huddle in their homes.

"It's an odd time of year to be talking about Christmas, obviously," McKeen said. "And people might reflexively go ho hum, instead of ho, ho, ho.

"On a day like this, it is hard to imagine snow. But we all know it will come soon enough."

The most exciting part of the new parade, he said, is that it will be held outdoors.

Last November, the city's indoor Christmas parade was cancelled after 26 years.

It took more than 200 volunteers and cost $40,000 for a parade that wound its way through the corridors and pedways of City Centre Mall and adjoining buildings

The new outdoor parade is set to go on Nov. 21, at 4:30 p.m.

Now PLEASE create a German Christmas market at Churchill Square. I know I'm a broken record, but that just seems to be such a no-brainer.

EDFMA took part in the tree lighting ceremony (Last year??) when it fell on a Saturday and vendors were able to kick around after the regular market in city hall. But it only works for a select few vendors who have product that isn't dependent on temperature.

It could be really neat, but to do it right you would need something different than the regular tents and heaters....It would be a significant cost for a once a year event and wouldn't make sense to do unless their was a partner footing the bill.

Defrosting Design
CITY’S NEW DESIGN GUIDELINES CAN MAKE DOWNTOWN WINTERS WARMER

BY OMAR MOUALLEM
FROM THE WINTER 2015 ISSUE

“For the Love of Winter” sounds like something you’d get in your Christmas stocking, but it probably wouldn’t fit. At 152 letter-sized pages, the City of Edmonton’s draft of winter design guidelines is, by some experts’ estimates, the most comprehensive in the world. When council inevitably approves a version of it in 2016, it could help shape our architecture and public spaces for decades to come.
