Not sure which thread to use, but the Edmonton Queen is up for auction

Hope it stays operational. It's a great way for people to explore the river valley.

Group floating idea of ferrying pedestrians across river once footbridge closes
http://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/group-flo...oses-1.2872961

Quote:
A local community group has come up with at least one option for pedestrians to cross the North Saskatchewan River once the Cloverdale footbridge closes: a ferry.

When the popular bridge closes in July, the next closest river crossing will be just less than a kilometre away, leaving pedestrians to take a long detour to get across.

“Walking all the way down to the Low Level Bridge, and crossing there, and then trying to get up the hill on the stairs that are currently closed because of the funicular project,” Paul Bunner, co-chair of the LRT Liaison Committee said.

Bunner says a water craft to ferry pedestrians across the river might be an option.

“A small, simple, flatbed ferry with a small motor on it that could putter back and forth across the river,” Bunner said.

The area around the footbridge is popular for foot traffic in the river valley, and the proposed ferry would cross from Rafter’s Landing, to the summer dock.

The committee has been pitching the plan to City Council for years, they said – and it’s hoped the plan will be given the green light, although some details need to be worked out.

“For the ferry or water taxi to exist here, the water would have to be controlled somehow,” Retired Fire Captain Chuck Polturak said. “Other major cities with water taxis have a little bit of control.”

However, Bunner says the timing for such a plan couldn’t be better, as the Edmonton Queen is up for auction.

“This is the chance for the city to do a pilot project, people would appreciate it, people would really enjoy having the experience of being on the water,” Bunner said.

The Cloverdale footbridge is scheduled to close in July.

Edmonton Queen Riverboat sold in auction for more than $500K

http://globalnews.ca/news/2677214/ed...ore-than-500k/

Quote:
Spencer said it’s up to the new owner to decide the future of the vessel.

“It’s their’s to kind of do what they will with it.”

However, Spencer said the new owner’s plan right now is to continue to own and operate the boat the same way it has been done in the past. He said there may be minor tweaks like a coffee shop and possible renovations, but they plan to run cruises as long as river water levels permit. There is no word on whether that will happen this summer.

The successful bidder doesn’t want their identity revealed at the moment.

City seeks feedback on new River Valley Park signs
June 10, 2016

The River Valley Wayfinding project is about helping you know where you are, where you need to go and how to get there.

To help you find your way in Gold Bar Park, new signs have been installed. The City of Edmonton is now asking you to tell us what you think about the new signage. Gold Bar is the first park to roll out the new family of signs that will be used in all future river valley park and trail projects.

Citizens are encouraged to visit Gold Bar Park to view the signs and then complete a short survey to tell us if the signs are informative, easy to read, well-placed and effective. If you can’t visit the park but wish to make comment, photos in the survey will allow you to view the signs. The online survey will be available from June 10 to July 22.

The River Valley Wayfinding project addresses the need for consistent signage throughout the River Valley park system. Feedback provided will assist in making final adjustments to these signs before they are installed in other river valley parks and trails.

Work completed in May
The project team awarded four of six bid packages, including the funicular, the elevator and site/foundation work, structural steel and concrete.
Screw pilings were completed on the urban stair foundation. These types of pilings are wound into the ground, like a screw into wood. They can be installed quickly and with minimal noise or vibration, and are a good option for the type of soil along the river valley slope.
Work in progress and planned for June
Construction now underway across all site areas.
Upper promontory cast-in-place concrete for the machine room is in progress.
Steel rails for the funicular have arrived in Edmonton.
Pile cap construction is in progress.
Trail closure updates to be confirmed with LRT. New plans will be issued at barricades and a notification will be distributed.
The team has ongoing communication with the LRT project to ensure coordinated schedules and trail closures around Louise McKinney Park.

Nope, that was a recap of 'the work completed in May'. Opening in targeted to be Nov 2017 if I recall.

July 2016

Construction of the Mechanized River Valley Access (MRVA) began in March 2016 and is anticipated to be completed by late 2017. The City of Edmonton thanks drivers, businesses, and trail users for your patience as we complete this exciting new addition to our river valley.
Work completed in June
Construction was in progress in all areas of the site.
The concrete foundations and walls for the funicular machine room were poured.
Workers completed most of the pile caps for the urban stair concrete.
The foundation for the elevator at the lower end of the trail got underway.
Work in progress and planned for July/August
Pour the concrete floor slab for the upper promontory.
Install structural steel for the urban stair.
Install the rail system for the funicular.
Install lower trail concrete walls for the elevator.

Citizens invited to Pop-Up Museum in West Rossdale

July 21, 2016

The City of Edmonton and Edmonton City as Museum Project are hosting a Pop-Up Museum in West Rossdale. Citizens are invited to learn more about one of our city’s most historically significant areas and to share stories about their connection to this meaningful place.
Date: Sunday, July 24, 2016
Time: Noon - 4 p.m.
Location: Rossdale Community Hall (10135 96 Ave, Edmonton)

Free BBQ provided by Fat Franks

“River Crossing, also known as West Rossdale, is at the heart of our city. It is a place that is historically and culturally significant for many people, and where the history is long, layered, and deep,” said Lisa Larson, Senior Planner, City of Edmonton. “It is a site that has been at the heart of trade, travel, kinship, spirituality, community, and culture for thousands of years.”

The Pop-Up Museum will be an interactive opportunity to not only learn more about this past, but for attendees to also share their connection to the West Rossdale area. Attendees who have a photo or item related to the area are encouraged to bring the items to be shared and displayed at the event.

Looks like the Queen is getting some work done. Has anyone heard what the new owner has planned for her yet?

Noticed the funicular has some infrastructure in place now. Not sure if it's the track it will run on, but something is there...
