Governor Crist signs Florida rail expansion bill signed into law

Florida rail expansion bill signed into law
BY STEVE BOUSQUET AND JANET ZINK
HERALD/TIMES TALLAHASSEE BUREAU

TAMPA -- Gov. Charlie Crist signed the rail bill into law Wednesday morning at ceremonies in Tallahassee and Tampa.

Crist gathered with local lawmakers for the signing in a symbolic spot near a bus station in downtown Tampa -- property owned by the Department of Transportation that is designated for a rail stop.

``The real message here today is jobs, jobs, jobs,'' Crist said. ``During this economy particularly, we need to do everything we can to provide jobs for the people of Florida. Keep fighting for them every day to make sure they have opportunity for a brighter future.''

A handful of protesters picketed near the area, criticizing the bill as a waste of taxpayer money and comparing Crist to President Barack Obama.

Downtown Miami On Track For Expanded Commuter Rail Service By 2014

Read More: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/1...n_2006011.html

.....

At least 24,000 riders would use a proposed new commuter rail line between Jupiter and Downtown Miami, reports Miami Today. The line lies along Florida East Coast Railway's US 1 corridor tracks, which the company plans to use for its upcoming Miami-to-Orlando All Aboard Florida rail service.

- Longtime South Florida commuter service Tri-Rail, which currently makes its southernmost stop near Hialeah, is hoping to utilize FEC's Downtown track for a new eastern "Blue Line," pending municipal cooperation toward station development. Both companies have expressed mutual willingness to share the FEC tracks. All Aboard Florida would service significantly fewer stations along the corridor than Tri-Rail, which plans to add 12 new stops between Fort Lauderdale and Miami for Blue Line service.

^This thread is about Orlando's commuter rail system, SunRail, which is currently under construction.

There is a separate thread for the All Aboard Florida project.

Hyundai-Rotem is getting the Silverliner V DMU variant certified for Denver's NW Corridor non-electfrified Segment DMU line. The rest of the commuter rail system being built will use the EMU Silverliner V's, so part of the winning contract was also that the vehicle have a DMU variant which is FRA-compliant.

awesome, kudos to Florida!

Sunrail station access newest amenity touted by real-estate agents

Quote:
The three-bedroom, three-bath townhome in Sanford has an island kitchen with stainless-steel appliances and a selling feature new to Central Florida real-estate listings: a location just a few blocks from a SunRail station.

"Community is adjacent to SunRail station stop. SunRail due to open spring 2014! Why drive when you can hop on the SunRail?" reads a pitch for the house, listed by Privilege Properties for $149,400 in Sanford's Riverview community.

About six months before the 31-mile commuter-rail line is scheduled to start service, a handful of homeowners and sales agents have started to mention SunRail in listings of houses near 12 stations being built in DeBary, Sanford, Lake Mary, Longwood, Maitland, Winter Park and Orlando.

"Buyers from out of state — from places where they use transit — they're aware of it," said Orlando real-estate agent Lorraine Weaver, who mentioned proximity to SunRail in marketing a house in downtown Orlando.
