I really can't believe they didn't just wait 2 weeks, and lease that spot out for sxsw.

Agreed. Thought this begs another question -- once this gets built, not to mention the 11-floor 84 Rainey development, and especially 90 rainey, I wonder how the city and APD will handle Rainey St. traffic during SXSW. It's already a giant clusterf*ck living in the area during this time, but it's only going to get more complex when there are people that need to get "deep" inside of streets that would otherwise be closed for 80% of the day.

The city has a plan in the works but by no means will it be painless.

We've got to reduce the number of single occupant vehicles in the urban core. Something that will help the movements of people in this area would be transit dedicated lanes and protected bike/scooter lanes. We're behind on this, but most cities are...

You know it occurred to me that Red River is the only way the whole neighborhood connects to Cesar Chavez. All everything else shuttles you out to East and I-35.

That's gonna start to be a major problem as those skyscrapers start to fill up.

Scooters in Austin? Nah. Not a single one.

Actually, if you don't look where you're going you'll either trip over one or be mowed over by one. Jdawgboy and I were talking about how far outside of downtown we've seen them, and I just saw one tonight at Manchaca & William Cannon, which is positively far south by scooter standards. The guy was waiting at the crosswalk crossing Manchaca. I've seen a few here and there around my neighborhood, but that was the first time I'd noticed someone actually riding one around here.

Yeah, those are popping up in record numbers throughout the Asian cities that I frequent as well, right by all the silly bikes that break after a few uses.

It actually doesn't look all that bad at night with the scattered wall sconce up-lights on, but yeah... really can't believe that was signed off on. Looks like something from a 1940-50's moderne building. Back when giant blank walls were all the rage for some reason.

The wall and lack of life along Cesar Chavez is simply sad. The addition of the skybridge gave them the license to turn their back on the city as best they could. It's as though it is now their umbilical cord which sustains them and they are perpetually in the womb. Missed opportunity.

Why can't that block be cut in two and Rainey extended out to Chavez?

That block is owned by WeWork and the site of their rumored 1,000,000 sq. ft. office tower.

That view of the skyline, and in particular the Austonian, is literally about to be blocked three times over.

Yea I never understood why they didn't have the main entrance face Cesar Chavez rather than north which is an odd choice considering the drive dead ends and then theres a granite gravel parking area along the creek. Just a very strange placement all around. I can understand they wanted to have a front facing Waller Creek so they can connect it with the forthcoming improvements but seriously, the most logical direction IMO that a wall should face is east. Besides Palm Park it would face towards 35.

As to the question about construction during SXSW the only site that I saw that wasn't active was Block 185 though there may have been a few workers on site working on some smaller odds and ends. I parked at the Google Tower when I went DT during SXSW so I passed by it just about daily except for Wednesday. The Marriott was still being worked on as well as I believe Block 71. I'm also pretty sure that there was some activity at the Parsely site too.

This article about the Quincy points out the fact that there is a demand for downtown apartments because it has been three years since the last rental tower opened.
I guess that's true because there was a shift back to condos. The residential tower pipeline has now shifted back to mostly rentals.

They could always convert to condos at some point in the future, unless there are different building specs for the two (like extra sound proofing, etc).
