This tower really frustrates me. Not that my individual opinion really matters in this case, but I have a real strong feeling that Im not the only person who feels such sentiment. From some sides and angles it looks fairly elegant and refined. From others it looks bloated and sort of... ramshackle even. Maybe theres a better word, but from certain angles, especially when viewing it from the ground, the design is unpleasant and looks very poorly thought out. A gradually tapering tower with a sad little crown. From the ground it really looks bloated.
The crown just doesnt look well designed. From certain angles its pleasant, but from others its an asymmetrical mess. That little twig of a spire looks like an afterthought. Of all the buildings constructed in Manhattan over the past 20 years, this building is one of the few that would actually benefit from a long spire. The spire on this shouldve been planned to be at the very least twice the height of what is actually being built. The stubby spire is one of the worst aspects of this buildings design. It just looke stupid.
The proportions of this building are, as a whole, really poorly thought ought and straight up ugly in many ways. The building as a whole isnt ugly, but it isnt much better than mediocre. It looks like the result of Picasso mutating the Chrysler Building into a sort of Cubist jumble with a hint of Bauhaus.
This building isnt awful, but it really hasnt turned out to be a graceful tower. With a few not-so-difficult and probably not too expensive tweaks, the design could have been slightly refined to result in a much more graceful project. I want to say again that a longer spire wouldve helped this design significantly. I doubt a taller spire wouldve cost too many more shekels.
Have to admit that it looks pretty nice from the air, though. But most people arent going to be looking down on the building from a helicopter...
