Biden tosses Trump's classical architecture order (Politico)

This is excellent news.

Biden tosses Trump's classical architecture order
The former president’s action on “ugly” modernist federal buildings received condemnation from architects as aesthetically myopic.

The Department of Health and Human Services building in Washington, D.C., is one of the city's prime examples of brutalist architecture, which former President Donald Trump disparaged as "ugly." | Mark Wilson/Getty Images

"Brutalists, rejoice!

Former President Donald Trump’s attempt to favor classical architecture got the ax on Wednesday as part of a sweeping scrapping of Trump-era executive orders by President Joe Biden.

Trump’s executive order in December, titled “Promoting Beautiful Federal Civic Architecture,” disparaged the modernist architectural styles of some federal buildings as “ugly” and a jarring contrast with local architectural styles. The Trump administration hailed Greco-Roman-inspired buildings as an important homage to democracy in antiquity..."

If you put gold-tinted glass in that building, Trump would have had no objections, as gold is his favorite color.

This is great news. I know the look isn't appealing to everyone, but I think it has its place and functionally it was an asinine order to replace the structures.

There is a place for classical architecture but even on the National Mall, some of the most attractive buildings are the modernist buildings such as the National Air & Space Museum and the Canadian embassy (located just off of the Mall, eh!).

There is absolutely no reason a federal building in Los Angeles or Atlanta needs to be classical architecture.

It's my understanding that a lot of the Brutalist buildings, like the FBI and Frances Perkins Building, are obsolete and require extensive repairs. Therefore, I hope that they still come down.

Further, to my knowledge, the government is letting private developers rebuild such sites.

That Trump E.O. was the one thing I agreed with him on. I guess we can go back to having neighborhoods like SW Federal Center, so hideous due to their brutalism that nobody goes there unless they have to.

You find this eyesore attractive? It's like every bad 1980s architectural cliche rolled into one.

You’re right, the Canadian embassy does have a lot of things going on with it.

Southwest DC

I was back in DC for the weekend to get our apartment together and took some photos of various developments in Southwest and the Capitol Riverfront/Navy Yard.

Here are two photos of the Randall School development on I Street, SE. Nearly 500 apartments, an art museum, and retail space will be part of this development.

Here is a rendering of the development.

Buzzard Point

This is at Half and S Street, SW, one block from the DC United stadium. 344 residential units and ground-floor retail are planned for this building: https://mrprealty.com/buzzard-point/ .

WMATA headquarters

Here is a photo I took on Friday of the new WMATA headquarters at L'Enfant Plaza. This is on 7th Street, SW. This building is a rehabbed 1950s-60s era building.

Here is the previous building.

We got lunch on Saturday from Red Apron's location at the Roost, a new food hall at the Blackbird residential development at 1401 Pennsylvania Ave, SE. I got take-out (no indoor dining for us while there are still 2,000 daily coronavirus deaths) but this will be a great venue when the pandemic recedes.
