Municipal election audited financials are up...

Find out who cut cheques to your favourite and most hated municipal politicians. Russ Wyatt's is fun, it reads like a rolodex of Winnipeg's major developers and builders, and in some cases their extended family.

Looks like anybody who's ever set foot in the offices of Ladco or Terracon had a donation made in their name.

Comprehensive breakdown of the Ft. Rouge Yards projects from today. Marquess is obviously lying through his teeth all the way through, but it's still an extremely well-researched piece of journalism...

St. Vital Detailed Area Plan

I started transcribing a couple of the 'Detailed Area Plans' from the Metropolitan Corporation of Greater Winnipeg. They date from the late 1960s to the early 1970 (post amalgamation).

Not complete yet, but mostly done, is the Plan for St. Vital. I noticed that even back in 1968 they had planned space for St. Vital Centre, which opened 10 yrs. later.

Anyways, I plan on finishing the text and making the maps as separate PDFs. Each plan will have a separate blog page. I was advised to create a new blog to keep it separate from my other non-city planning posts.

Author: Metropolitan Corporation of Greater Winnipeg
Publ.: December 1968
Size: 903.2 K (PDF)

St. Vital Detailed Area Plan

NOTE: All of the data tables are complete in this report. Some, though not all of the maps have been scanned

Anyone know what is going on with this Cavalia thing? That's some serious business going on at Sterling Lyon and Kenaston. I googled it after. It said that its the worlds biggest tent with a big horse show in it.
But I was wondering why wouldn't they have it at the ex grounds instead of bringing in 500 loads of gravel to site that isn't graded and has no parking? Also isn't that hydro land? How would that deal have gone down?

I thought that Hydro had that land sold in 2009, there was a zoning hearing in the spring of 2009 about splitting the land into 4 lots and Hydro/Centra were going to keep 2 of them.. Maybe it did not go through and they are leasing it out to get some easy money.

Regarding the EX maybe they wanted too much money for their land.

Province kicks in $10 million to rejuvenate the Manitoba Museum:

http://www.wireservice.ca/index.php?...play&sid=17380

Great news if you ask me. The museum is fundamentally sound but the way in which it presents Manitoba's history is really outdated in some parts, verging on the ridiculous. An overhaul will keep it looking current. Best part is the creation of a new Winnipeg Gallery... it always amazed me that there was no museum that really told Winnipeg's story.

Big time act of philanthropy spearheaded by the Chipman family:

Chipmans help open Jesuit school in Winnipeg's North End

Quote:
A new private school is set to open next fall in one of Winnipeg's poorest neighbourhoods.

Tuition-free Gonzaga Middle School is scheduled to start operating in Point Douglas in September 2016.

A group of alumni from St. Paul's High School, including Mark and Steve Chipman, are founding the school in an effort to help break the cycle of poverty through education.
Apparently the school will funnel students into St. Mary's Academy and St. Paul's High School where there will be bursaries waiting for them. This will be a game changer for a lot of kids.

A lot of the old street lamps have been replaced by the new LED lights. There are now enough of them that I think I can form an opinion.

To me, my reaction to these things is the same as when I first bought an expensive box of LED lights (way back when they were first offered) that were only provided as "daylight" intensity. Then a few months later, these same LED lights are now offered with a "warm light", and I am thinking - shit - now I am stuck with these horrible blinding white lights that last for 20 years, and are too expensive to turf in the garbage.

Long story short - these new LEDs are IMO too white, blindingly bright when you look at them, and I far prefer the original soft street lighting. Hopefully at some point, they can transition into a "warm white" option.

Redwood bridge was closed awhile ago to convert to LED. It really is a lot better, but I know what you mean. Just don't look up! Also, the one lone light across the street was changed recently and there is just so much more light on the ground now.

there have been complaints about light pollution from the astronomers since the new LED lights have come in.

Here is an article with some pictures of Milan showing what the conversion to LED looks like from the space station.

My street has LED lights with diffusers, and that makes a HUGE difference. They're not blinding, and the light is brighter than the sodium arc lamps they replaced.

But most of the residential side streets don't use diffusers, and the light is very sharp. The shadows are too dark, and the lit up areas are too bright. The contrast is too high. I still prefer them over the sodium arc lights though, they make everything muddy by comparison. The LED lights are a clearer light, if that makes sense.

Even if they can't get warmer LED lights, they could put a yellowish cover over it to filter out some of the blue and green light.
