Cost of new train station triples to $146 million
By Brian Lockhart
Published 9:00 pm, Wednesday, June 24, 2015

If you’re going to ask for a new train stop, you might as well go for broke, even if it triples the price.

After initially courting the state to help build a $48 million Metro-North Railroad station and 1,000-space parking lot for Bridgeport’s East Side, officials have now decided it should also accommodate Amtrak’s high speed rail, at a cost of $146.1 million.

That means building center island platforms, rather than just side platforms, to help juggle trains traveling at different speeds to different destinations and avoid bottlenecks.

----------------------

I like the idea of an east side station, but I really don't think it's worth having center express platforms for this station, especially if it triples the price.

You could make the case for this at Bridgeport....but East Bridgeport? Even if a station gets built , TOD and ridership is not an overnight thing.

To any forumers, I'm keenly interested in this project, including existing conditions. Please post any and all info if you have it. Thanks

The site is a half mile to the East of the current Bridgeport Station/Downtown. The area surrounding it is your typical abandoned Industrial landscape...with a few recently built low income housing... Everything in Bridgeport in terms of private investment seems to move at a snails pace. While nearby New Haven is on fire with investments and other cities along the line like Norwalk or Stamford have no issues finding developers.

To add to that, the biggest development in the area which local pols are patting themselves on the back for is Steel Point, which consists of....

A Bass Pro Shop and a movie theater.

Fairfield and New Haven recently got second MetroNorth stations, so Bridgeport wants one too.

In the future, it's possible that Bridgeport Hospital, which is 2 blocks away from the proposed station, will dramatically expand by taking over the site of a neighboring high school, which will be moved to one of the brownfield parcels of the recently demolished GE site.

What's the point of the middle island platform? This isn't a place Amtrak's gonna wanna stop at. The side platforms are more than enough.

Thanks for the info per Bridgeport. One of my main concerns with a new station is them totally screwing up the stone embankment/viaduct when widening it for 3 platforms. The graphic shows them closing or shifting Crescent. Why couldn't they just bridge crescent there using matching stone and let Crescent run thru underneath the outside platform above. That would be really cool actually. But they'll probably eff with the architectural grace of the embankment with opposing materials and a nonsensical jog in
Crescent street.

Not related, but Nexis can you tell me why it is that the Harlem line lost much of its quadruple trackage? When was that done... The 60s, 70s?

Devon Bridge repairs not going the smoothest...

Aging infrastructure frustrates Metro-North riders
By Stephen Singer AP

HARTFORD — Aging and broken public works have again plagued the Metro-North Railroad in Connecticut, slowing commuters into and out of New York City's Grand Central Terminal.

A span on the Devon Movable Bridge that crosses the Housatonic River between Stratford and Milford got stuck in the open position Wednesday. The bridge, which was built in 1904, carries trains on the New Haven line, Waterbury branch, Amtrak and Shore Line.

More repairs to a track will be required before the span is in operation next week, said Kevin Nursick, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.

The span came off its gears as it opened, he said. Trains are still able to pass, using the southern span at reduced speeds, "exponentially more manageable" than the failure at the Walk Bridge in Norwalk last year, he said, when commuters had to find alternative transportation.

The Walk Bridge, which was built in 1896, became stuck twice in the open position last year.

Devon has experienced "severe deterioration," said the Northeast Corridor Commission. Movable bridges, tunnels and other structures date back as far as 1873, the organization said.

"Certainly, it's one symptom of years of deferred maintenance on rail line infrastructure," said Jim Gildea, vice chairman of the Connecticut Commuter Rail Council, an advocacy group.

The state has targeted for replacement four moveable bridges on the New Haven line — A Greenwich span over the Mianus River, the Saga Bridge over the Saugatuck River and the Walk and Devon bridges.

Costs related to the Walk Bridge are about $400 million, while costs to replace the other bridges have not been detailed. Replacement work is not expected for several years.

The state budget approved by the legislature will include a $2.8 billion increase for infrastructure over the next five years, including $1.77 billion for rail, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said.

The failure of the Walk and Devon bridges is a "wake up call" to state transportation officials, said state Sen. Toni Boucher, R-Wilton.

Her constituents are "ballistic," she said. "They have suffered for so long."

Terri Cronin, chairwoman of the Connecticut Rail Commuter Council, said she's been riding trains for more than a decade and service has never been as bad as it is now.

"We've ignored the infrastructure so long it's catching up with us," she said.
