UT proposes new university in South Texas

By Ralph K.M. Haurwitz
American-Statesman Staff

University of Texas System regents voted unanimously Thursday to pursue a merger of two South Texas universities into a new institution that would be eligible to receive roughly $100 million a year from a state higher education endowment.

The plan, which also calls for a proposed medical school in the region to be part of the new university, is intended to expand educational opportunities, health care and economic development in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, a part of the state that is both fast-growing and poor.

“It’s a historic day for South Texas,” said Gene Powell, chairman of the Board of Regents, who grew up in Weslaco, in the heart of the region.

Some simple math: 2 management teams - 1 = 1.
That looks more like a cut to me.

Actually, it's not. The same two old campuses will still exist, plus a new third hospital school campus.

The merger was approved earlier this month via SB 24.

UT Pan Am and UTB will merge to form one university.

The medical school sounds inefficient, though. The first two years and undergraduate offices will be located in Edinburg. The second two years and graduate offices will be located in Harlingen. Residencies will be scattered throughout the region.

Yeah, UT didn't "create" anything here.
