Here's a larger version of the last picture. A.P.Johnson gets his name on the top left of the building. On the right it says "C.J.BALL".

Ah, the good old brute force approach. Sometimes it's the only way .

A nice cold drink....

Here is the latest O'Keefe & Merritt fridge in 1931...$159.00. Of course this is a photo setup but we can see a bottle of Canada Dry Sparkling Lime soda and some pears in a bowl. These were sold at the May Co. Very modern in 1931... as ice boxes were still in use.

Detail of the 1931 fridge. We see the little drawers in the top area for ice trays. Grab some cubes for your Highballs and cocktails. Always be careful of ice cubes....they can lead to babies. There's provided a pan in case the freezer drips some water.

There's something missing in this view that makes it stand out from all the rest.

ebay

Where's the B?? Did it just decide to fall off one day?
__

That's an excellent photo of the old Hotel Rosslyn HossC. So what's up with that small shack?(it even looks like it's heated)
If it's for parking, they need to clean up their vacant lot...it's covered in trash.

After looking at it again, I'm pretty sure it's a greasy spoon.

OK, this is pure coincidence.

These young ladies are posing in front of a building with the same street number as the Gramercy Park photograph, 2415.

ebay

-obviously it's a different home than the one on Gramercy Park.

Here's a second group photo (same girls?) listed by the same seller.

ebay

Notice that the photographer's address is in Eagle Rock.
Could the 2415 (in the first photograph) be located in Eagle Rock as well?

The "Big Suzy Collection" - my mind doth boggle!

I'm amazed there's some Westmore stuff still floating around. Or maybe I shouldn't be - sooner or later everything floats to the surface on Ebay. Frank Westmore talked a fair bit about this merchandise they sold. It was quite a big deal as they had a whole separate factory in LA where all this stuff was made. Frank's first job for the family was to work the machinery that crushed stuff up into the sort of powder that went into compacts like this.

King's Tropical Inn, Washington Blvd

In the interests of verisimilitude, I thought I'd post a comment that I received today on a page of my website on which I talk about King's Tropical Inn at 5935 Washington Blvd, Los Angeles. Of all the places I've talked about, King's seems to get the most traffic. I found what he said really interesting so I thought I'd post the relevant part:

Here’s what I remember about this great place:

There was mynah bird in a cage in the lobby who let out a loud chirp or said some words every now and then. There were clouds projected on the ceiling that slowly moved “with the wind.” Hawaiian music played in the background and there was a real “tiki” bar (that only my dad could sit at and have a drink).
As for the food… King’s French Dressing is what made me a real fan of green salad. Our family bought bottles of it at the cashier and it became my favorite dressing EVER! I’m a pretty good chef and I’ve tried to replicate that taste, but haven’t nailed it yet. The dressing tasted like the smell of fresh paprika, but using paprika to make the dressing doesn’t translate; like the smell of fresh-roasted coffee beans doesn’t translate into the liquid brew. The color was a dark orange and it had the consistency of a thick tomato sauce. I actually hired a private investigator to see if he could track down the original recipe. He did manage to locate John King Jr’s mother (the father and son both passed away early) who was living in Denver, CO. When he talked to her about the French Dressing recipe and my search for it to be able to taste it again, she had paranoid visions I was going to bottle it and sell it and make a fortune. Her answer was a resounding “no!” She’s probably not around anymore and it’s a shame. But I’ll continue to experiment and, who knows, I might get lucky!

As for the Fried Chicken dinner, that’s where we used the honey packets on the crispy chicken crust. Crunch! And the corn bread was also memorable.

Funny that KTI went through a flood in 1933. We had our own Baldwin Hills flood in 1963, and although we were about a mile from the reservoir, our house still got five feet of water and we had to relocate for about a year until it was redone.

If anyone out there happens to have any info on King’s Tropical Inn French Dressing, please share…

So if anybody reading this does have the recipe, I'd love to hear from you.

The capsules appear to have been constructed by McDonnell in St. Louis; however, there were plenty of SoCal connections to the project. Bendix, North American, Convair and others. https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/i...E5rUuDmDNn3V1A
Did you know 2 astronauts died in St. Louis when they crashed their jets into the McDonnell building during a fog?

A retro trailer motel like Hicksville near Joshua Tree:

At least that's where they're standing in the photo...seems a tight squeeze for a park but I guess that's why they're going vertical.

Sonny LA - Looking at the picture, I think you are right. However, isn't that dirt path about all that is left of the old Teed Street?
I would hate to see that go too. We spent a lot of time discussing Teed Street a couple years back and it is just about as sacred as Clover Trailer Park.

Check out ER's great old post on Teed Street.

I think this was the remains of Teed Street in 1948 before all the buildings went in. ???

embossed STAGG stamp lower right.

First the cars... circa 1925 Studebaker and Chrysler... as for 2415 Gramercy Park found by oldstuff, it was first occupied by paving contractor Frank V. McPeak. He appears to have still been living there when he died in 1957. Interestingly, his daughter Helen and her fiance Charles A. Browne both listed 2415 as their address when applying for a marriage license in February 1939; an "H M Browne" was still listed at 2415 Gramercy Park as late as 2000. In 1939, the McPeak/Browne phone number was ROCHESTER 1773; by 2000, it was 323-733-1773. God is in the details....

I just ran the over 500 records in Los Angeles County by the Assessor's Office and have come to the conclusion that where the house or building was, it is no longer there. There are some with neighborhoods which might be right given the style and size of the houses but no existing homes with that number that were there in the 20's. There are a lot that are new construction. Yesterday's luck was a fluke....

Interesting, because it looks like a postcard photo, too.
A guess: Perhaps they were repairing the lighting mechanism used at night?

Here's a large size of this postcard so you can see the recently noticed "Toff's Coffee Shop" in between the First Federal Building and Grauman's Chinese Theatre, and, if the postcard coloring is correct, what it's sign looked like.

Vintage Hollywood

The Chinese is showing the 1960 film The World of Susie Wong starring WIllam Holden and Nancy Kwan.

This is a 1953 postcard (small size) photo of the Chinese which is showing King of the Kyber Rifles.

Vintage Hollywood

Missing on the corner there is Toff's Coffee Shop. From the previous photos I posted (HERE) we know it was there from at least 1956 to 1977. (I saw Star Wars at the Chinese Theatre and I do not remember Toff's Coffee Shop at all then or afterwards.

This 1960's postcard (large size) sends us "Greetings from Hollywood":

Vintage Hollywood

I have to ask "from where in Hollywood?" Nothing I can make out in the photo screams out "Hollywood" to me, nor can I decipher where in Hollywood this might be?
The only clue from the source is this seemingly incomplete info: Hollywood Blvd. at night west from circle

French Dressing made with paprika sounds ''Southern''. Here is one recipe but there are many more online....probably hundreds.

French dressing with lemon juice, sugar, dry mustard, pepper, paprika, garlic, and olive oil, among other ingredients.
Ingredients:

3/4 cup vegetable oil or olive oil
1/4 cup lemon juice
1 tablespoon sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 clove garlic, halved

I looked up Brooks Travel Service and found one on Hollywood Blvd. at The Circle. Thing is, The Circle is in Hollywood, FL, not CA. So this is a nice picture of Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood FL
