Take a look at European history, you'll see why most countries of southeast Europe don't really trust the Turks so much.
The Greeks for instance, to begin with.
They still occupy half of Cyprus that's an EU member state, and never apologized for having invented genocide in 1915.
Ever heard of the Armenians?
So some are still skeptical about their benevolence. And you must show genuine friendship to enter the EU.
If you don't, you just don't belong.
Bon, I don't think my country in particular ever had any problem with Turkey, but the Greeks and others are our friends.
You can't abandon your friends to their potential enemies when they're worried.
I'm kinda sorry about it, but that's life down here.

INVENTED GENOCIDE?!
Your comments are definitely trolling. There were many European led genocides before the Armenian genocide in Africa and North and South America. I think you're the one who needs to open up a history book and see what atrocities have been committed during the past several hundred years.
The Armenian genocide was not the first genocide and it won't be the last. What an ignorant thing to say. Germany is in the EU but caused the Holocaust, but that's fine because they owned up to it and apologized?
If you actually go to Greece or Turkey there isn't a perceptible animosity toward each other in society.
