Fascinating, but still creepy... That Ryugyong Hotel just looks evil!

Has to be one of the ugliest, most charmless cities anywhere on the planet - even worse that East Berlin at the height of the Cold War.

Such wide boulevards almost completely empty of cars, and that was probably rush hour. Outside the city, many people are going hungry.

Quite the amazing spread, I've never seen Pyongyang so up close and personal.

Fascinating place! Everything looks eerily orderly, but very interesting getting a glimpse into streetscapes and aspects of daily life.

Although North Korea is quite an awful country and very poor they did manage to build a good city from an urban planning point of view

I wonder why most countries in Africa haven't managed to do that. Could it be because of corruption?

Great pics. This has to be one of the hardest cities in the world to fine quality photos of; But here they are. Thanks!

I did not know they got to the point of cladding the hotel. I thought the first picture in this thread was photoshopped.

I hope you do not mind if I add the arch of reunification.

Add as many as you like. The pyramid building has been completed quickly by an Egyptian company.

These images look very suspect. I thought there was an energy shortage in the evenings.

Oh there is plenty of power shortages, but not so much in the capital since it is the showcase city for the regime where they take tourist and foreigners to show them how wonderful things are.

I gather they are a little more open to taking photos within Pyongyang than in the countryside or other cities. From Google Earth and the few photos I've seen from on the ground, the capital is much better off than the rest of the country, including the power supply. Some have probably seen the power grid map image where Seoul is lit up but there is only a blip around Pyongyang in the north, the rest of the country dark.

Even just adding a bit of color to those apartment blocks would go a long way to add a little, for lack of a less trite term, soul to the place. I guess the drab concrete everywhere makes the colorful propaganda posters stand out even more.

Really fascinating.

Being that I'm quite young, I don't doubt that I'll be around to see a unified Korea, and I'd be really interested to see how the North changes afterwards.
