^At ground level, things aren't so great. To make way for these towers - for which there's little demand, by the way - Saigon's historic buildings are being razed at an alarming rate. A real shame...

A shame to hear about all the buildings being torn down. I wonder why they are building all these tall towers everywhere without the demand? Is it tied to some sort of communist initiatives? or is it just that they are cheap to build right now?

^I dunno. I don't pretend to be an expert but...

I think it's just a product of the typical Third World economy - everybody's trying to get their buildings up and filled before the bubble bursts. All across the city you see massive, partially built monoliths just sitting empty for one reason or another.

RE NGUYEN HUE

That really is a massive project. Creating space for pedestrians is good idea, especially in HCMC but I cringe at the thought of a 50ft gold statue of Uncle Ho - it's weird...

^Don't get your hopes up - it's happening.

I still love the idea of pedestrianising Nguyen Hue but it's created a traffic nightmare. It's going to take some time for people to change their driving habits.

HCMC development update

Lots happening on the development front in Ho Chi Minh City, though it must be said that some of the larger projects seem to be stalled for one reason or another.

Here are a couple notable developments currently underway.

Vietcombank headquarters - District 1

Masteri - Mixed-use development/ metro station - District 2 (Thao Dien)

The One - Ritz-Carlton/ residential - District 1

The rest can be found here and here.
