Ava Gardner lived there when she was a contract player for MGM. Mickey Rooney was dating her and if you walked by at the right time of the evening, you could hear them fighting in her kitchen, which faced Yucca Avenue.

Percy Kilbride (Pa Kettle) and Ralf Belmont were hit and killed by an automobile while crossing the street in front of the Canterbury. Belmont died instantly while Kilbride died three months later.

Here's the Trancas Restaurant at 30763 Pacific Coast Highway.

www.pinterest.com

From the Pepperdine Libraries Digital Collections:
"The Trancas Restaurant was built in 1949 after the Malibu Trading Post, on the same location, burned down. Today, there is a Starbucks Coffee shop at this location, which is in western Malibu at Trancas Canyon Road on the Pacific Coast Highway. This postcard [see link] showing the interior patio dining area is likely from the 1960s."
The view below roughly lines up with Godzilla's photo. The Starbucks near the center must be the one mentioned above.

Google Maps
The topography of the area has not changed since the 1940s. The photos may appear different but it all depends on the lens, focal length and the height of the camera from the ground.

I happened upon this photograph on pinterest
There's a good possibliity we have seen it. (on NLA)

pinterest / originally from LAPL (but I couldn't find it on LAPL)

"Man waiting at hotel entrance. Double-sided sign above door reads "N. Spring Hotel" on one side, and "Spring Hotel" on the other,
the "N" having worn away. This is the hotel entrance on N. Spring Street side to the second floor of the Sentous Building."

My question is:
If a hotel is entirely on the second floor then where is the office?

...Do they have someone sitting on a folding chair in the hallway taking money?

Also...Who's the dude in the photo?

So when was Roosevelt in Hollywood?

Hello Kevin our NLA friend, sorry but it was you that made some much needed corrections to the realities of CBD oil. Then you added a brief mention of your TV show. If that was not a self promotion, what was it? Thank you for posting information about CBD. I'm sure the Forum members appreciate it as I do also.

Thank you for the info on where Members can find your TV show. There are thousands of channels now and TV services, its daunting. I remember when TV Guide was great before it split in two.

People are very upset these days and can be easily triggered to anger. I understand.

TV guide
I have a collection of the Fall Preview Issues of TV Guide dating back to 1975 when I lived in Pasadena for the summer. Kept it up until they stopped issuing the small version and switched to a Time Magazine sized TV Guide. It reminded me too much of the crappy TV guide you'd get with your Sunday paper.

Mainly what I remember about Pasadena in 1975 was when I would take deep breaths in the smog poisoned air, my poor New England lungs would ache.

And I only mentioned my TV show to show I know wtf I'm talking about when it comes to CBD. I've interviewed farmers, manufacturers, even testing facilities. I guess someone who just talks out of his ass wouldn't understand framing a comment with bona fides...

FYI, "Penny Dreadful: City of Angels" premiers tonight on Showtime. Its set in 1930's L.A. and stars Nathan Lane among others. May be worth a watch...

Congratulations: Gaylord and Kevin, today you both managed to utter your usual potty mouth snarky comments.

At least er has kind words for me and other Forum members.

Occasionally I make mistakes in my comments...wow big deal. Here on NLA there's a huge squad of Internet Cops who read my every word with great interest. Its very flattering and thank you all.

Sorry!

I think we've commented here before on the origins of the "Oscar" nickname for the Academy Award, but I don't think I ever heard this particular story before. It seems that before his demise Wallace Reid took shoe-shiner Oscar Smith under his wing and got him a stand at Famous Players/Paramount...where Smith was noticed and put in pictures, including Harold Lloyd's The Freshman (1925), Man Power (1927), The Canary Murder Case (1929), and Double Indemnity (1944).

Smith lived at 1200 East Adams from 1923 until his death in 1956; his family appears to still own it nearly a century later. More of his story is here.

More on Oscar-name theories here.
