Undated Telegram file photo of Water Street from the 50s/60s.

No idea how they fit that little stretch of green?

This is what that corner looks like now:

That "green belt" on Water St. was created one summer back in the early/mid 60's when a couple of blocks were transformed into a pedestrian only section and traffic was rerouted. It would be interesting to see if it could be done again...somehow me thinks there might be protest.

Anybody have a view on housing prices in the Metro region? Will they continue to rise for the next 5+ years or will they stabilize/drop at some point?

They may continue to rise but it probably won't be a dramatic change. Where they are now is in the general area of where the prices will stabilize (ie. I don't expect homes to increase another $100,000 in price)

It's looking more and more likely that I will be visiting St. John's in July, if anyone is interested in meeting up.

Great Fires of St. John's

So I was looking at some old pictures of St. John's yesterday and was thinking how much of a shame it is that the great fires destroyed so much of old St. John's. Then I started to realize that I don't really know much about the fires and what caused them. So I throw this question out to others on this forum (without googling). How much do you know about the great fires and any other stories connected with them?

I know which areas of the city were destroyed, and could circle them with great accuracy on a map.

I know where the Great Fire of 1892 started, how, etc. Stories about wealthy families bringing their art and valuables to the Anglican Cathedral thinking it'd be safe there, but only watching it burn.

Tent cities set up for the homeless in Bannerman Park for the wealthy.

The poor flooding into the former Central Slum where the Cabot buildings and City Hall are today.

Etc.

Okay I had to laugh when I noticed my new ISP address. I just moved back to Halifax and everytime I open The Weather Network home page it shows me the local weather of Northwest Newfoundland somewheres around South Brook! Apparently this is where my ISP address connects to the internet.

I think Eastlink is trying to tell me to move to rural Newfoundland.

Well, that we can support generally... but love this land as I may, I can't recommend South Brook.

Here's something off topic for you... A friend asked me this weekend what Newfoundland would look like today had the French defeated the English (or at least came to a truce). That led to a lot of deep thought and a lengthy conversation, but one thing that came from it was the idea of Placentia being the provincial (federal?) capital or at least a relatively large city.

I was bored at work today so I started looking at Google Maps' topography feature and tried to imagine how a city of say ~50k would look with the area's unique terrain.

I'll post a screenshot of what I'm envisioning in my head but long story short it would be one incredibly beautiful city, assuming all elevations were developed. The best part is the terrain would naturally limit sprawl.
