The ambitious project will be part of the desert city of Neom, whose size will be comparable to that of Massachusetts. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman believes that the new city will be as iconic a project as the Egyptian pyramids.

- The skyscraper will be called Mirror Line. It will consist of two parts with a height of 488 m. For comparison, the height of the Empire State Building is 381 m. The Mirror Line will be in the top 15 tallest buildings in the world and take 13th place if nothing taller is built by then. And there is time. The Mirror Line is expected to take 50 years to build, although Prince wants the project completed by 2030. — The two parts of the skyscraper will run through the desert, coast and mountains parallel to each other. Architects will take the curvature of the Earth into account when designing the building. Mirror Line will have a separate underground high-speed train line, a stadium at a height of 304 m and a pier for ships.

I'm sure there will be convenient body chopping facilities with acid vats every kilometer or so.

With all time records breaking in hot temps right now, you would think this would be half underground. Its like putting 10,000 skyscrapers in a line in the desert.

Does this building get credit for that height if the wind blows 30 meters of sand up against it, like how sand is deliberately deposited at jetties?

Where would they even get the population to support this?

I mean its sounds cute in say a world where temperatures make it to extreme to live, so we all have to live in some sort of Mars Base situation on Earth but where does one find the population to support this?

A better solution would be for the Crown Price to put these trillion dollars into Elons Mars base colony, than ship the entire population there and start harvesting resources on Mars.

An illustrator would have a hard time drawing that for the database.

The artist's rendering uses 'greebles'. It's how Lucasfilm decorated the models of the battle cruisers and death star with vents and turrets to give them complexity and scale - the sfx guys bought a bunch of model kits and glued the bits and pieces on the side until it was busy enough. Whoever designed this building took some 3D shapes, applied a random industrial-looking texture image to them, and procedurally copy and pasted them all over the model. You see it a lot in movies, games, etc.

To me that says nobody is actually drawing up a real floor plan of this thing or even trying to speculatively imagine one. This is video game concept art like you see on art subs on Reddit at this point. I bet you it will never happen.

What is this absurdity?

A linear building as tall as the empire state building running roughly same the distance as Manhattan to Philly?

Take the Empire State Building.

Make it over 25% taller.

Now extend it horizontally, towards the southwest.

Continue going southwest, extending the building as you go.

...
Until you reach Philly.

I like that we are starting this experiment at this point in human history. If this does work, it may be the future of how our civilization designs cities. Our neighborhoods consisting of communities living within one building with all services in walking distance.

While $1 trillion may be a staggeringly large sum for a single project, somehow I feel it this would need a lot more than that? I mean, the Central Park Tower which is similar in height was $3 billion despite being only about 40m at its max width. So if we were to extrapolate that to building enough of them side by side to extend 120km, that would cost around $9 trillion. Yes NYC construction costs are high, but I'm pretty sure building in the middle of the remote and inhospitable desert isn't going to be cheap either?

Considering Saudi Arabia's whole annual nominal GDP is only around $1 trillion I can't see them pulling this off unless it's an absolute necessity. Maybe if they used enough slave labour?

Exactly what I was going to point out... If you consider the cost of materials only (i.e. assuming slave labor for everything), maybe a trillion suffices. Nine trillion is an extrapolation of Manhattan building costs, so it's obviously an inflated figure, even when you have to pay your workers.

It is very sci-fi and I like that. I just don't think it will happen.

Where would the airport(s) go?

Like Frank Lloyd Wright's mile high skyscraper proposal, will never be built. These proposals are floated for publicity.
