Extell Development Thanks Everybody for Cleaning Up Its One57 Crane Mess

By Kim Velsey
Nov 7, 2012

Quote:
Today Extell sent out a thank you to all those who worked, quaked in fear or were otherwise inconvenienced by the nearly catastrophic crane collapse. Extell’s full statement is below:

We want to acknowledge the many agencies and individuals – - from the Mayor’s Office to the Office of Emergency Management, the Department of Buildings, the Department of Transportation, the New York Fire and Police Departments, Con Edison, OSHA, the Department of Environmental Protection, Lend Lease, Pinnacle Construction, Favelle Favco, JV Trucking and Rigging, Safeway/Atlantic, Stroh Engineering Services, Howard I. Shapiro & Associates, Domani Inspection Services, 20/20 Engineering and Inspections and countless others – - who worked tirelessly together during the past week under the most challenging conditions to secure the hurricane-damaged crane atop One57 and keep our community safe.

We are grateful that 57th street and the surrounding areas are reopened and all of our neighbors were able to return safely. Thank you for your extraordinary efforts.

There's A New 'Billionaire's Belt' Emerging In Manhattan

Meredith Galante
Nov. 8, 2012

Quote:
Gross, the author of 740 Park and Unreal Estate, said he had seen an uptick in the number of billionaires flocking to luxury buildings in the 57th Street and 59th Street corridors to southern corner of Central Park, along to the Bloomberg building and 432 Park Avenue. "This neighborhood never really defined itself before," Gross told Business Insider. "Now, it's becoming the new 'billionaire's belt.'"

Luxury towers of note in the neighborhood include One57 (made famous by the "dangling crane" during Hurricane Sandy), 15 Central Park West, the Timer Warner Center, and the Metropolitan Tower. And it will soon be home to Nordstrom's flagship NYC department store. Fifty-seventh Street and Central Park South form the “spine” of this belt.

"It's not uptown, but it's not downtown," Gross said, which prompted him to nickname the region. "This area has the potential, in the next few years, to become the richest neighborhood in the country," he added.

I'm not surprised at 57th street becoming the "Billionaires' Belt", so to speak.

I could name numerous businesses along that area that sell luxury items at unforgiving prices.

Why New Luxury Tower One57 Will Never Be As Successful As 15 Central Park West

Meredith Galante
Nov. 9, 2012

Quote:
15 Central Park West, the ultra-luxury building that's home to Goldman Sachs' Lloyd Blankfein and Sting, among others, is a hard act to follow. Acclaimed real estate author Michael Gross thinks another luxury tower, the much-hyped and still-under-construction One57, is going to have a hard time emulating 15 CPW's success.

"One57's marketing has clearly followed that of 15 Central Park West, but you're dealing with two different markets," said Gross, who wrote "740 Park Avenue: The Story of the World's Richest Apartment Building" and "Unreal Estate." For one thing, 15 Central Park West, on the corner of West 61st Street and Central Park West, is set in a much more established residential neighborhood. It was always marketed as as "family building" and for "New Yorkers who lived here already," Gross said.

One57, on the other hand, is a few blocks to the south and east in a neighborhood that's not exactly known for its residential life. Buyers in this new glass building have admitted they plan to use it as a trophy home or crash pad when they are in Manhattan for business.

Foreign buyers have been dominating the New York luxury real estate market in the past couple years, and this is especially true in 15 Central Park West's re-sale market and for the first-time buyers at One57. That's the main difference between 15 Central Park West and One57 right now: the type of first time buyers, according to Gross.

Gross acknowledged that it's hard to tell for sure what a new luxury building's story will be when it's still under construction, but it's hard not to pay attention to a building with so much hype. "It's clear (Gary Barnett of Extell Development) is trying to take a past model and make it applicable to a new century," Gross said. "And to me that the fact that it is both modern and part of the continuum of luxury development in New York, That's what makes it fascinating."

A person has to have very much money to buy one of those apartments just to have a crash pad when they are in Manhattan for business.

And the way they secured the crane, it is what is called to think outside the box. Everybody was thinking in an helicopter, another crane or whatever, and ended up being something as simple as turn the boom to the building and secure it to the columns of it.

I'm hoping that this tower restarting in full-force by December will be our collective Christmas gift from Mr. Barnett.

Dentists suing owner of crane damaged by Hurricane Sandy: Evacuation hurt our business!
Winds left crane dangling over street 90 stories below

By Robert Gearty
November 9, 2012

Quote:
Two dentists are suing the owner of a crane left dangling perilously over midtown after Hurricane Sandy, for damages incurred from losing a week's worth of business while they were evacuated.

Barry Musikant and Caroline Stern said their dental practices at 119 W. 59th St. were among the businesses affected by the mishap.

The lawsuit, filed in Manhattan Federal Court, says Musikant also had to evacuate his home on W. 57th St. Musikant and Stern are seeking unspecified damages. Named as defendants were the crane's owner, Pinnacle Industries, and contractor Lend Lease.

After realizing nobody was hurt, that was the first thing that crossed my mind. I'm sure plenty of businesses were hurt by this, and there will probably be more lawyers with clients looking to sue.
