Sure HG ! Every Noirisher should recognize by now the Central Station by the slope of the sidewalk and these big stones rather unusual in Downtown.

Fire in the Gray Building, 1939.

ebay

That's a big crowd for a fire. It must have been lunch hour.

-notice the Steckel Studio sign. Have we heard of them? (probably a photographer's studio)

It's hard to tell. It would have to have iron rings if it were a hitching post. -but it's at the right spot for a hitching post

I'm not sure what that post is about, but seriously doubt it was/is a hitching post given the absence of any ring or other means of securing the reins or a tether line.

Off the question: How many people can be seen in the immediate area and beneath the tree along side the street?

This was on ebay quite some time ago. The seller was asking $750.00!

We've seen many of these view on NLA, but perhaps one or two are slightly different.

Central Park (showing the future site of the Biltmore Hotel)

Main Street with the Baker Block in the distance.

I'm not 100% sure which parochial school or hospital this is.

Many years before P.C.H.

Plaza Church (long before the bell tower was remodeled)

If i remember correctly, we've seen this view many times.

I wish the seller had scanned more (there were 65)

Here's a striking photograph of the San Fernando Valley, circa 1900.

Looks to me like there might be a ring on top. Btw the LAPL has this image listed twice, with slight variations in the reproduction. It labels one "1907" and the other "1880s"--surely Spring and 5th was built up with more commercial buildings by 1907....

Yes siree, that's a hitching post. The little ring could be on the top. Occasionally there was a hook on the backside of the post.
Sometimes naughty neighborhood boys would lark around and steal the rings.

Looks like 5 people at least and a car around the corner.

Southeast corner of Hollywood Blvd. & Cahuenga, circa 1935.

We've probably seen a before/after post of this corner before, but I couldn't find one.

Here's a rather noirish view with some fine lighting, also circa 1935.

I'd say you're right, GW. USC has this view titled:

Exterior view of "The Central" a shop on the corner of Spring Street and Fifth Street, ca.1898

More Venice Miniature Rail Road, 1905-25

Prior posts:
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=8542
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=10742

Also, I unwittingly showed much of the VMRR track in my now-updated Venice Panorama post, as well as the roundhouse, carhouse, and shops for the VMRR:
http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...ostcount=20334

1909 map showing route of the Venice Miniature Rail Road. Starting at the VMRR station at Lake Avenue and El Camino Real (lower right corner of map; now Venice
and Abbot Kinney), the train traveled west past Venice Park (site of Villa City) then looped around at the end of Windward Avenue and went back east along the
same route then turned north on Riviera, to Rialto, then turned right onto El Camino Real and back down to the VMRR station:

http://bjwrr.org/wp-content/uploads/...re-Railway.pdf

The same area today:

The loop at the end of Windward Avenue, c. 1905:

The VMRR tracks next to Villa City, c. 1905:

USCDL -- http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/co.../73511/rec/239

1910; specific location unknown, but photo shows VMRR track on bridge over canal (is that a sea serpent
on the far side of the bridge?):

Huntington Digital Library -- http://hdl.huntington.org/cdm/single...d/11825/rec/46

1912:

1925:

Taking up the tracks, 1925:

USCDL -- http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/cdm/si.../90946/rec/320

And, as pointed out here (http://silentlocations.wordpress.com...onica-waves-2/), you can see the VMRR in action in a wince-inducing
Hal Roach/Our Gang ripoff, The New Engine Driver, apparently by The Century Kids (no date; original titles in Dutch). A couple screen grabs:

Watch the movie here (VMRR first appears around the 4:00 minute mark): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uArLF-B8pgE

At the very end of the movie, a little girl jumps into Aldebaran Canal; I'm not sure if this is the same bridge, but the area looks similar.
It looks like this bridge has a sea serpent on it as well:
