Yeah it's the way things go in America, I'd rather wait for this than having them build a massive 3 story complex that gets approved within a year.

This parking lot has been one of the biggest gaps in dtla for decades. If devlprs can now start clearing out Taco house #1 & the adjoining parking lot at 4th & Hill St, that will allow for an even bigger long overdue sigh of relief....

That parking garage needs to be demolished. One among many in downtown that should be replaced by a 45-60 story building.

That's the General Petroleum garage built in 1948. Here are some links, and a post below from the noirish LA forum:

The second shot is slightly wider. On the right is the Western Union building which I posted Julius Shulman pictures of in post #33691.

Both from Getty Research Institute

The garage still stands on the corner of 8th and Flower Streets, a couple of blocks from the building it originally served.

I'm sorry, but I can't see why that would need to be preserved for historical purposes.

There is a reason that this Mitsui tower is built midblock when the podium extends to the corners. I wonder if the air rights above the garage are still in tact and it’s zoned for a tower.

They wanted unobstructed views and if they went to the corner, then 777 fig would be right in the way. I personally hate that it's mid block. Should have been 2 towers, no podium

Wow a concrete parking structure, sooo historical and sooooo beautiful hahahaha

That thing might be one of the biggest eye sores of any modern city. Big woof.

I'd be less angry if it was zoned for a tower and they would cover up the parking structure with panels or cladding, oh woops sorry I'm just dreaming lol.

Its amazing how a parking garage outlasted most of the building around it. Here's hoping it accidentally meets a wrecking ball or becomes structually deficient in the next quake.

Perhaps it is a metaphor for Los Angeles

Nope, just bureaucratic lunatics flexing their muscles to feel important. The preservation of historical structures should be put to a public vote for local residents, with replacements including commercial//business/residential/affordable housing as an option on the ballot.

If you renovated the first floor and put in some retail. Then you added nice cladding to to upper floors, it could actually look pretty decent for a relatively small investment!

Long time lurker, first time poster. Hi everyone! 👋🏻

Regarding the historic parking structure. I’m always down to get rid of parking structures. There are a dozen I can think of in the surrounding area but this one I actually don’t mind. I think if it’s cleaned up and painted and a 40s style diner/bar (a la Houston Brothers, Pouring with Love or 1933 Group) is added to the ground floor (the corner of 8th and Flower), it will have that classic noir look and give the area character. Especially if the surrounding lots get built up.

I’m imagining the vibe of this “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” painting.

Anyone know where things stand for Olympia?

The urgent care ended its lease months ago, but the site has not been cleared yet.

Updates?

I don't know about that one but I'm guessing it's even further away from starting....for at least going through the demo process....than the apt tower proj at the NE corner of 4th St & Hill.

Look at the dates on this permit.....over 3 months to receive approval to tear down a little food stand in a very visible part of dtla? Although not as visible as where the olympia proj would go up, still very visible to ppl visiting grand central mkt and angel's flight.

Over 3 months? Really, LA officials?

Thanks, Citywatch, but does anyone have updates on Olympia specifically?
