I'm a lifelong Philly resident and have lived in Germantown, West Philly and North Philly all my life (aside from a few summers in Istanbul and North Alabama to see family.) The dramatic rise in homicides is very concerning, but it is still largely concentrated in poorer and majority black neighborhoods. Lately however, it doesn't seem to be due to drug disputes or reasons we are used to. It's largely been petty beefs between teenagers through social media platforms like Instagram. And I don't want to sound like an old boomer, but the local underground rap scene here is definitely tied into it. Drugs and turf still play a part, but the shooters are dying younger and a lot is about Instagram clout these days. PhilaPD's homicide clearance rate is abysmal, something like 50%, and a lot of people get the feeling that they only really care when a shooting happens in a white/gentrifying neighborhood. The lack of trust been the hood and the cops runs deep though, and it will take a lot to build it up.

With that being said, Philly's real estate market is still booming, the arts scene is thriving, lots people are still moving into Center City, W Philly, NW Philly, S Philly and parts of N Philly. It's depressing to say, but generally speaking if you're not a young black man living in the hood, you shouldn't have to worry about being murdered. It's just such a shame that such a beautiful city has been experiencing such bloodshed.

More than 800 high-ranking criminals arrested in one of the biggest raids ever.

It is estimated that more than 100 murders have been prevented.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.dw....ing/a-57808917

The operation was built around the "ANoM" messaging platform, which was being secretly run by the FBI. Some 16 countries, along with Europol, were involved in the global operation.

Europol held a press conference on Tuesday to praise the successes of Operation Trojan Shield that saw law enforcement agencies around the world work together to uncover organized criminal activities.

Jean-Philippe Lecouffe, deputy executive director of Europol said "this law enforcement operation is exceptional by its global outcomes."

The agencies involved "carried out one of the largest, and most sophisticated law enforcement operations to date in the fight against encrypted criminal activities," he added.

Assistant Director of the FBI's Criminal Investigative Division Calvin Shivers also spoke at the press conference, saying that "the success of Operation Trojan Shield is the result of tremendous innovation, dedication and unprecedented international collaboration."

He added that the operation also resulted in the seizure of over "six tons of cocaine, five tons of marijuana or hashish, two tons of methamphetamine, and over $148 million in currency."

Who was involved in the operation?

Some 16 countries were involved in the operation that was headed by the FBI and Europol along with Dutch and Swedish police. Over 18 months, they had access to more than 27 million messages sent over the "ANoM" app. As a result of the cooperative efforts, police were able to make more than 800 arrests and search 700 locations.

Portland has 43 homicides and (preliminarily) 41 murders after 5 murders in the past two days (none apparently solved, at least according to police press releases). There have also been 473 shootings (not all of which resulted in injuries). What's interesting is that an FBI task force arrived in Portland a few weeks ago to coordinate with the police bureau on violent crime investigations, but violent crime has only gone up since then, and the number of those crimes being solved appears to be as low as ever.

Some 2020 murders numbers I compiled for these cities. They came from the local news of these places which themselves gathered the data from their local police.

Houston - 400, and that was as of December 29. That was a 42% increase over 2019, and 100 more than the the highs from 2015 and 2016.

Dallas - 251. That was the highest number in Dallas in 15 years.

San Antonio - 128. That was the highest number in San Antonio since 2016 when they had 149.

Fort Worth - 112. That was the highest number in Fort Worth since 1994. Their 2020 number was also a 59% increase over 2019.

Austin - 44. That was the number for the City of Austin city limits. There were a total of 68 in the 5 county metro. 2020 was the 2nd highest number of murders in Austin's history. The year with the most was 1991 with 49 murders. Outside of Travis County, Hays County saw the highest number of murders in the metro with 7, followed by 5 in Williamson County, 2 in Caldwell County, and one in Bastrop County. The number of murders in Travis County that were outside of Austin's city limits was 9. Of the 68 murders in the metro, 51 were committed with a gun totaling 84.4% of murders in 2020.

Lubbock - 35. That was up 105% from 2019, and the highest number in 34 years.

Corpus Christi - 34. That's up from 31 in 2019.

Killeen - 26. They had 16 in 2019.

El Paso - 25. They also had a total of 32 murders in El Paso County, meaning they had a total of 7 in the county outside of El Paso's city limits. The 25 murders they had in El Paso was fewer than the 40 murders they had in 2019. The year with the highest number of murders in El Paso came in 1993 when they had 56. In 2010, they had only 5.

Beaumont - 19. That's one more than 2019. Their record high was 40 in 1994, and most recently, they had 30 in 2014.

Waco - 17. That was the highest number in Waco since 1994.

Amarillo - The 2019 number is 15.

Midland - 13.

Wichita Falls - 7. They had 4 in 2019.

Abilene - 3 as of September 22. They had 6 in 2019.

Toronto is now at 27 homicides.

This is down from 32 the year previous at this time.

Based on population of 3,000,000

Toronto's homicide rate is 0.9 per 100k so far this year.

My brother saw a guy shot in Las Vegas a few years ago. Actually, he didn't see it happen, but he heard the shot and saw the guy laying in the street before the medics got there. He later died at the hospital.

My dad and his friend saw a guy dead in the street on St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans in the 1980s. They were riding the streetcar at the time.

The closest I've come to anything like that was calling the cops on a guy I witnessed breaking into cars behind our neighborhood. It turns out he lived on our street. I had to write a statement about that. Anyway, that guy later shot his girlfriend and she died at the hospital. It's sad because I saw them wheeling her out on a gurney into the ambulance. Before that happened, my uncle and I talked to him one night as he was walking down the street and bummed a cigarette off my uncle. From what I remember, either the cops or an ambulance had shown up at another house on the street, and all three of us were out watching the scene.

Spent the last week in LA and saw a guy flailing a handgun in the air and pointed it at someone while driving down Sunset in Echo Park. Glad I was driving and it was a curved part of the road so any potential random bullet spray was unlikely to get me.

Anyway:

42 people have been murdered in Chicago so far in June, with 310 YTD as of yesterday.
Philadelphia is a 250, 40% up YOY and has already surpassed it's yearly total for both 2013 and 2014.
NYC is at 181, only up 12% YOY. I find this impressive, even if still depressing.

I once heard a bunch of gunfire on the corner of my block. Called the cops and a few hours later they called back and said they found 10 casings but no body. Sounded disappointed.

Also I was once nearly a victim. Walking through the Tenderloin in the early evening and past the YMCA (a high-rise). There were a bunch of teens gathered out front as I walked by--looked like they were having some kind of party inside. When I got almost to the end of the block I heard a bunch of obvious gunfire and turned around to look. There were several of the kids lying on the sidewalk but before I could react I heard sirens and more cops than I knew existed descended on the area. Anyway, if I had been walking maybe 10 seconds slower I probably would have been passing through the crowd that was the target.

My first apartment in SF was on Post and Larkin. The walk from the subway through the Little Saigon part of the Tenderloin was always interesting and a bit scary, but I always felt like I could take care of myself and refused to let it shake me.

One time I came upon the body of a woman lying in the middle of the sidewalk. She was pale and blue and clearly not breathing. There was a small crowd of Latino men standing nearby and acting like she didn't exist. They seemed upset by my presence. I called 911 to report the body I found. The 911 operator wanted me to stay with the body and check for a pulse and the whole nine. I explained that I was surrounded by men who were staring at me like they wanted to kill me and so I was only calling to report it and needed to move on.

To this day I have no idea what happened to that woman and that was the last time I ever ventured south of that apartment on foot.

Speaking of living in the "Tendernob," the only time in my life I was ever mugged was at an ATM at Sutter and Hyde.

I'm assuming, considering SF is now so expensive that one cannot live there unless one is rich, that the so-called Tendernob isn't so rough anymore. My experience living in that hell-hole of a neighborhood was in the mid-aughts. There was a bar called R-Bar on Sutter and... Polk-ish? I loved that place. With the exception of that little bar, that neighborhood was worthless.

Portland has 46 homicides after a pair of slayings in the past few days. Of those, 42 are certainly classified as 'murders,' with 4 possibly justified.

The last 22 days Chicago has seen:

349 people shot
65 murders (to include a random killing by a homeless person of a lady here on vacation with a knife)

Here are your most dangerous cities in 2019. Portland doesn’t make the top 60. Looks like Ohio is the most dangerous state. This is based on murders per capita which is the best predictor of “danger”.
