That neighborhood desperately needs some new brick, stone, metal, or tastefully done precast midrises/towers.

I like that they decided to keep the TORONTO lettering at Nathan Phillips indefinitely.

I wonder how much a sign like that costs. If they aren't too expensive I should get one that spells out my name and put it on the lawn!

100K?

“The sign itself costs about $60,000. It costs about $30,000 to put it in place,” he said.

Holy sh*t! At $100k I should certainly hope they keep it around for a while. Who would be crazy enough to spend that on something then throw it in the trash after a few weeks.

Well, it was put up exclusively for the Pan-Ams, of course, but as caltrane says, it seems to be a tourist attraction, so the city decided to keep it indefinitely, last I heard. A bit hubristic, sure, but also a resounding stamp of identification.

yup!

There are even markings on the ground that tell the people where to stand to get the perfect shot of the sign, marked out across the square. I've noticed some just like climbing on the letters and sleeping in the O's.

Just imagine the surprise and delight of people wondering around the streets to suddenly round a corner and discover that they're in the city of Toronto!

An experience of a lifetime...

I've done that. Except I found out I was in Ontario, CA; the southern coastal(ish) one.

I'd heard of it but I didn't really know where it was until that moment.

I don't know if they're tourists per se but the sign is surprisingly quite popular. There are usually people all over it.. sitting on it, taking pictures with it, etc.
