Frankfurt am Main

A missed flight connection back in August meant having to spend the night outside of Frankfurt. But it also gave me the opportunity to explore some of the city, which I had never visited. With a population of over 700,000, Frankfurt is Germany's fifth largest city and its metropolitan region is home to 5.8 million people. It is also a major financial and transportation center, home to one of the world's busiest airports and its Hauptbahnhof is one of the busiest train stations in Europe.

Here are some of the photos I captured in my short time there:

It's really weird. I always hear people talk down on this city and say that it doesn't really have culture or a soul or it's too corporate, but it looks like a very vibrant, walkable city. Most American cities would kill to have a urban core like that.

If anything, it goes to show the quality of cities that Europe has when a city like that(it would be top 5 or 6 in America) is considered to be one of the less traveled to cities or not much of a destination.

Thanks for the photos. They were great.

Very nice pictures of Frankfurt am Main. Thanks for sharing.

It looks a very interesting city with many attractions to visit. I like the mix between classic and modern buildings in the downtown. Besides, I like its financial area and Main river.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

I visited back in October, and it was my German friend who talked down on the city more than anyone - "You don't want to stay in Frankfurt, there's nothing to see there." Having heard that, and hearing other negativity towards it over the years ("It's just a business city"), my expectations were low.

But I found Frankfurt to be lovely! I loved the juxtaposition of North American-style skyscraper downtown meets European, walkable, mixed-use neighbourhoods adjacent. Some of the streets between the towers were a little grim, but so are many streets like that in NA cities!

That said, I felt that after a solid day of walking the centre, that I had seen pretty much all that there was to see. Some European cities can be explored for days and days; weeks even. I was hoping for some vibrancy across the river from the city centre, but I couldn't find it.

Wonderful photos! They take me back!

Great shots - not a city that offers a huge amount to the photographer, compared to many European cities, but you've come out with a first rate set here!

Thank you all for your comments!

I was pleasantly surprised by Frankfurt after having heard all of the familiar criticisms of the city. It is true that it's certainly less "European" than many other cities, which I assume can be greatly attributed to Frankfurt being left in ruins after WWII. On one hand it has lots of wide streets and highrises with little street-level activity. On the other, there are countless public squares and pedestrian plazas with tons of shopping and entertainment options. I thought it made for an interesting mixture of "corporate American" and "European culture" in one urban core.

Frankfurt's transit system also seemed very well developed, which is not surprising. I loved how quick, easy, and affordable it was to get from the airport to the center of the city.

Great pictures! Thanks for sharing!

There's nothing wrong with Frankfurt, like there's nothing wrong with Zurich or Rotterdam either. There's a rich cultural life (all aspects) to be found there once you scratch the surface. It's not a tourist oriented city that's all. But you could live there a year and still discover new things to do every day.

Isn't Kaiserstraße, Bahnhofsviertel as shown in the last the R.L.D. in Frankfurt?
