Ahh, no shit; Cook Forest? That was the most beautiful forest I have personally ever been to in Western PA. I might buy into a camp site/cabin share someday near there with my girlfriend as an escape from the city.
I am a total city person but she is a hippie who likes to go hiking and camping. Gorgeous area. Thanks for the photo.

Yeah Cook Forest is sick, it reminded me of being in Olympic National Park with all the ferns and enormous trees, it is probably my favorite state park in the state.

Great pictures! I was going to ask about that interior, but some already did. Where is that log house located? I'd ask where each picture was taken, because they're all interesting, but that might be too much.

The log house is near Altoona in the tiny "town" of Mount Etna.

For my info, heres a link to my facebook post about it and the surrounding incredibly historic area.

that's amazing, i can't believe that there are any large old growth tracts left in pennsylvania...it must have been quite innaccessible/uneconomical to extract. most states with heavy industrial cities basically clearcut the old growth within a 200 mile radious (or more in the case of chicago) with the exception of small pockets.

I dont know how it survived most of the forests in the state being cut down for so long but it was one of the first pieces of land to be preserved in PA. The state park was founded in the 1920s but preservationists first started a campaign to save it in 1910. If it would have been much later, im sure it would be gone now. And no its on land that would seem to be ripe for cutting down, as its right along a major tributary and on relatively accessible land. Ive always wondered how it survived too. Its not even 2 hours away from downtown Pittsburgh too.
