The total weight might also be a factor. This pool looks like its 12ft X 40ft X 3ft deep, a cubic foot of water = 62.4 lbs, so the weight of the water alone would be 89,856 lbs or almost 45 tons plus the weight of the pool shell itself. Over all, these rooftop pools are just a gathering place for mostly naked people and an opportortunity to cool off and enjoy the view. I guess they don't have to be huge. All of the hotels I have stayed at had large pools, but they were on the ground floor and most of them were deep enough for a diving board.

Water is incredibly heavy. With rooftop pools you have to create such significant structural support under them as well as leaking/catastrophic failure remediation. Surprisingly, even a few extra gallons adds exponentially to the cost. It's much cheaper to have shallower pools. Most people staying at a hotel just want to swim some laps, lounge in a floatie with a drink, or soak up the sun anyway.

As for the non-rooftop pools, I have no idea. I guess the builders are just cheap.

Edited to add: What the General said, without the math. (I was posting when you posted, so I didn't see it.)

Ok, thanks guys. I was always curious as to why most rooftop pools were shallow, and now I know.

It's starting to look like a building. I think this is going to turn out to be one of our better looking mid-sized hotels.

Got to visit Spring recently and saw a small section of the Westin building. Gives an idea of how it will slightly show up from the west part of dt.

Sweet view. Frost looks good there with the light on the crown. It's going to be even better once the 5th & Brazos Tower goes up. It'll block the Westin from that view. Frost will be mostly blocked also by the Hotel ZaZa.

I must say, I'm scared that this building won't end up looking good at all. So far, it's pretty blah.

Yeah, I don't know with this one yet. I'm holding out hope for the design....I think once they finish/give it a good rinse and magellan goes up it'll look great.

I think it looks alright. The main thing is now it looks out of place in that area. As Austin mentioned, I think it'll look better once 5th & Brazos rises.

It's turning out great. I was down on East 6th this afternoon and it makes a great infiller between Frost and the BOA Tower.

The number of colors that this building has gone through during the construction process makes me wonder if it's actually a chameleon.
