LOL. No. It's a fantastic circuit and I'm as big a fan as anyone here ... having been to every COTA race of any kind and 4 GPs between Austin & Montreal. Go ahead & quiz me on anything F1 or COTA. Nobody says I have an ax to grind when I post my race pics or stories about tickets for sale, or other positive news from COTA or F1. I'm looking at the good and the bad, not one or the other.

That said, my 'fandom' doesn't rule my life. If something improper might be going on, then I think that needs to be given consideration. If this is improper, then I'll say so just as the TEF crap was/is improper. Rolling over and taking it is no way to go through life.

I guess by your definition I may have an ax to grind in the sense that I'm a huge fan of the racing and the circuit but I don't like what may be happening regarding the state subsidy of it.

OBTW, the IndyCar opener in Brazil was cancelled, so now they're looking for somewhere to kick off their season. Looks like one of the possibilities is COTA...

BMW is there right now and for the next two weeks showing of the new x5m, x6m, and the bleh 2 series convertible to the press. It's really cool how much use the track is getting.

Despite the increased focus on music, attendance for the 2015 X Games dropped by about 30K from 2014. Although the 2014 attendance was the highest in 10 years. ESPN has been struggling to increase interest in the X Games which is why they had the well publicized nationwide search for a new venue. IMO it's still supported well enough to continue through the last two years of their COTA deal, but after that, who knows?

Interesting.. I was kinda wondering about attendance this year. Several times the commentators said they felt the attendance would be as big if not bigger than last year but I was looking at some of the spectator areas and they looked pretty empty and this article confirms the drop.

Now granted two things to factor. One: last year was what you would call a novelty year. Brand new city, new venue, lots of hype which typically brings out the fans for the experience.

Two: athough it doesn't pertain to overall attendance numbers rather than what specific sporting events are more popular than others but when your watching on TV and you see fairly empty spectator areas in the stands or on the hill slopes that doesn't play well with marketing. I know and understand that COTA is a big venue that covers a large area but possibly for the future they should consolidate spectator seating and viewing areas to make the crowds look a little larger especially when watching on TV.

I also think they could do more Downtown. Many of these types of sports are urban based. Especially the BMX Bikes and skateboards. Last year's half pipe on Congress was awesome, looked great and made sense. Having a huge pile of dirt where they had to pole jump over didn't make as much sense from an urban perspective. It may be a bit more of a hassle for people living in and around the DT area but they should have most of the skateboard and bike competitions there. If we can have a 3 day F1 festival DT then surely we can have 3 days of XGame events.

I know that biggest reason why they chose COTA was because they wanted an all in one venue to host the majority of events in one place as well as to grow and expand with new types of events and we saw that happen this year. Whether or not the X Games sees success or decline is up to ESPN, ABC, the competitors and the fans. I also think the guys running the Circuit of the Americas are still not promoting and marketing events like they should on a local level. When MOTOGP came through all I saw were some billboards here and there but that was about it. Not only that I wanted to see it on TV but had gotten so busy around that time that I didn't even know it was going on that weekend until after the fact. Not good local advertising at all.

The owners of COTA need to get their act together and bring in more car races too, you know because of that beautiful 3.4 mile world class circuit that just sits there 80% of the year. Yea they have companies and automakers out there testing their latest models but come on, it should be about more than that. I would love to see Indy race at COTA. Heck promote the few races you have besides F1 and you just may actually see a lot more people attending them.

Sorry for my rant. This was originally about the X Games then I went off on a tangent. I just want to see more public use out of COTA besides a couple of races, the X Games and concerts. They have so much land still that could be utilized and with the Nland Surf Park currently under construction nearby they have so many opportunities go beyond what they have now and truely make a year-round multipurpose sports and entertainment destination that could bring in millions of visitors.

Circuit of the Americas comes in 2nd in poll of NASCAR owners, drivers, crew members and media of whether or not they should add a road course to the Chase.

That would be a great idea if they did it. I'm not a fan of oval races but I'd go see a NASCAR road course race at COTA. I'm actually suprised they haven't jumped on the idea sooner.

Fact is other than F1 and to a lesser extent MotoGP, COTA doesn't have any big races. What I mean by that is attendence wise they aren't big races. It's a great track and has plenty of room for people to go watch. COTA could easily handle double the current 120K cap although I think it's a good idea to keep it at 120K until we get the necessary road infrastructure in place to be able to handle 200K+ people. We can barely handle 120K and only the first Grand Prix was close to that at 117K on race day. Having both a NASCAR road course and INDY at COTA would go a long way.

By the way I'm excited about how they have planned this year's F1 weekend. Having an international superstar legend such as Elton John is exactly what we needed. This is afterall an international race. It seems to me that the organizers have finally gotten their act together and they have tied it in with other events as well.

When they say new festival lawn on the north end zone of the track they are referring to that large space where the hairpin is located correct?

Have they been working to create another music venue to fit larger crowds or is this a recent addition in response to bringing Elton John? What is it's capacity? It would have to be at a minimum of 50-60K and since the concert is included with the race tickets then essentially up to 120K people would want to see Elton perform.

Just curious because I haven't found anything else online about this new festival lawn other than its new.

Elton John does nothing for me, but I agree it's a good idea to have a big draw like him attached to this race.

I do have a few concerns and doubts about NASCAR coming to COTA.
#1: turn 1. Not a good turn for the not so nimble Cup cars, expect a lot of attrition from that turn. #2: There are 43 cars in a Cup race, would there be enough pit space to handle them all? #3: Where will the green flag be thrown? Halfway up the hill? If the start/finish line isn't near or on the hill, there could be rows of cars still traversing the final turns at low speeds while the cars at the head of the pack are taking off. #4: Would they run the entire track or a shorter version? #5: Will there be enough room for all the campers. #6: What race will they eliminate to add COTA. I doubt drivers will want to give up yet another week for one more race, their schedule is already grueling, they run 36 races a year. After driving the circuit, Kurt Busch said there would probably only be a few cars running by the end of the race if they did come. He was joking of course, but there would be major attrition here. COTA was not built for NASCAR or 43 cars running at the same time. I would love to not have to travel to TMS to see my favorite form of racing, but frankly, I don't see them coming here...hope I'm wrong. Btw, who is the other choice if we are 2nd?
