LONDON | St. George Wharf Tower | 181 M / 594 FT | 49 FLOORS

Quote:
St George's Wharf is the first tower in London to be topped with a wind turbine which will provide power for all the towers public lighting.
Other environmental technology employed includes heat pump technology removing the heat from naturally drawn water to provide heating for the apartments. Triple glazing will provide sound-proofing and heat-loss/gain as will thermal blinds between the glazing. The result will be the tower will use one third of the energy of a similar building.
St Georges Wharf Tower if built will be the tallest wholly residential tower in the U.K and the second tallest in Europe after Turning Turso in Sweden.
The tower is the final part of a scheme, the rest of which has been completed and sold out. Construction for the tower was originally planned to start in 2003.
The scheme has been revised twice following feedback from the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment and Lambeth Council. Despite meeting all the requirements the latest design has been refused planning permission by Lambeth. It was supported by the Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone who threatened the council with legal action. The developer successfully appealed to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister winning an eventual planning inquiry

Totally, I was thinking some tacky development in Shanghai or some other Chinese city.

I found that the older St. George Wharf towers look a lot better in person than in photos, or at least the impression I had from them in photos. The grounds around the buildings is quite nice, with gardens and paving stones which have a great texture to them. The appearance of the towers reminds me of a set of towers in Vancouver called Citygate, which I have always liked as well.

Based on what I saw last time I was there, I'd have to agree with you. Although I wouldn't quite say I like the five of them, but they are way too harshly criticized. I don't like the part with the light-colored textures (perhaps a modified design with more glass and a little bit of bright trim on the edges would have worked better), but I love how the five of them jut out so much. You're also right about the grounds surrounding it, it's quite nice.

many people criticise the lower rise element of St.george Wharf - but I don't mind it - when you wander round its very high quality - there is a high class 'sheen' to the whole development - I have to admit there is a South East Asia feel to it which i like as I love Bangkok / Singapore etc but many Euro / US forumers etc are not so keen - but you have to take in to account that many developments in London are aimed at an international market as London is seen as a stable safe haven for international investment.

Pilot was killed, one person on the ground also. Three cars set on fire, 13 injured.

It's a wonder not more people died as it hit one of the central arteries of South London during rush hour and narrowly missed a set of commuter rail lines.
