I was surprised how big it looked too. It seems they won't have to change the angles on normal skyline pics and still show them off.

Yeah, that's a pretty big bonus!

Here's a little something I made courtesy of the historic photos posted by TransCanada, and a future skyline render by CtrlAltDel. Not bad for 35 years!

It would be cool to see them turn the Beltline into a mini Central Park for Calgary. That would mean cut and covering of the tracks and the expropriation of land and properties however.

You do know that the beltline area in Calgary consists of at least 105 blocks of office/apartment/condominium and other buildings?

Dating myself here, I remember being in that stadium that was on the west side of the Mewata Armories.

I think it's safe to say 3EC is DOA! And I didn't see "Kings on 4th" or a potential "Oxford" tower!

Neither Kings on Fourth or Oxford are going to be complete anywhere near 2017.

3EC in that form is cancelled, and three other buildings on there aren't going ahead, but there are a good 5 or 6 towers not on there that are likely to be done/well underway by 2017.

That area by the tracks would be perfect for this. Create a huge, 1km x 250m park green.

Logistically it would be incredibly difficult, with the CPR mainline, office buildings and critical pedestrian, transit & car corridors all in the way, but with a billion or so they could figure it out. Realistically, not going to happen; but a great idea nonetheless.

Something like the proposed Garnter Expressway tear-down or something along the lines of the Millennium Park project in Chicago, that replaced a big train-yard with a park.

^ Add the ones proposed for the Healy Lands and the north side of Jasper Ave between 114 and 113 St, then it would be even cooler.

Ya it would be tough. NYC did it in it's early days and Chicago was lucky to have a multi-millionaire with a vision create their park after the great fire on reclaimed land all thanks to a cow knocking over a lantern. Vancouver was lucky as was Montreal due to the Natural environment. For the rest of us it would have taken real vision and great foresight to make it happen. The Beltline area though would make a great centre piece for the city of Calgary. If they were to do it now 200 years in the future Calagarians would be for ever in debt.

But we already have some really great parks in our downtown. We haven't lost out on anything I don't think. We have Prince's Island Park, the network of river pathways that nearly circumnavigate the inner city, Mchugh Bluffs Park a couple hundred meters from downtown, St. Patrick's Island Park, Fort Calgary Park, Lindsay Park, Central Memorial Park and the dozen or so other parks in the Beltline (plus a few new ones underway).

Yeah, Calgary is fine. It has the showpieces. It has the more relaxed spaces. It has athletic fields and larger escapes from the city.

The rail corridor will be a forgotten barrier once the lots and parking garages are better inegrated with the surrounding streetscapes. It's really not that wide to traverse.
