Chilliwack

Chilliwack BC.
Population 85-90,000
Metro-95-100,000+

I figured it's time for the wack to get its own thread.
Soon to be the newest Canadian census metro area, Chilliwack has some catching up to do here on ssp.
Formerly, a collection of small villages that amalgamated to form the city of Chilliwack, home to the largest military base on the west coast of Canada, and dominated by agriculture. Chilliwack now has diversified somewhat since the closure of the army base in 1995. Manufacturing, technology and services are among chilliwacks fastest growing sectors.
Known to the rest of the world for its corn, Cow shit and the band Chilliwack?
The cities motto is "The Great Outside" ( although "Chilliwack, a great town to buy some crack!", and "Chilliwack-17th most conservative city in the west!" Have both been suggested as unofficial slogans of the city.)

The purpose of this thread is to post photos of the city and relevant construction news as well as to provide a place to discuss ideas and future improvements to the city.

Chilliwack Council Approves First Reading and November 3 Public Hearing On Future Of Old Safeway Building

TOPICS:City Of ChilliwackRezoningSafeway
2015 Safeway October 16 002
POSTED BY: DON LEHN OCTOBER 20, 2015
Chilliwack, BC – To no one’s surprise, Chilliwack City Council unanimously approved First Reading and the movement to a November 3 public hearing to re-zone the old Safeway building on Main Street.

From the City’s Agenda for October 20, 2015: The market assessment undertaken for the 2008 Downtown Strategic Neighbourhoods Plan predicted redevelopment of the former Safeway site for high-rise residential and retail development as a catalyst for redevelopment in the core, in advance of development in the Five Corners and adjacent Yale Road East area. Accordingly, the Downtown Land Use Plan designated the eastern portion of the site fronting Main Street “Urban Quarter” for high rise apartment over retail development, and the western portion of the site for “Residential 4” high rise apartment development.

The buildings located at the former Safeway site have not been occupied for several years and the City’s Bylaw Enforcement Department has received numerous complaints from the community regarding unsecure and unsightly premises, graffiti, and other general nuisances. Following repeated attempts to work with SDLP Snowcat Ltd. (Sobeys Inc.), the property owner, Sobeys Inc. has now undertaken action to fence the perimeter of the buildings and start the process for demolition and to clean the property.

And some new news.

Conceptual site plan for new Molson-Coors brewery being considered for a property in Chilliwack. / CITY OF CHILLIWACK
The arrival of the Molson Coors brewery in Chilliwack may be one step closer to reality as city council gave introduction and first reading Tuesday to a rezoning of seven properties to allow for beverage processing.

The seven properties are small lots with houses on Elder Avenue, a small road tucked up near the Yale-Vedder Highway 1 overpass.

Here's the only rendering I could find of our last actual high rise proposal. An addition to the coast hotel (rhombus at the time) to be 30 stories with a convention center on ground. Eventually killed because of the shadow it would cast, and the height it would tower over chilliwacks current tallest buildings.

New hotel planned for Chilliwack

Plans are afoot to build a new 68-room hotel on Young Road near Highway 1.

Two variances were set to go before city council Tuesday night for the hotel, drive-thru and gas station proposal.

The Chilliwack property was originally rezoned in 2012, from CS1(Service Commercial) to CS2 (Tourist Commercial) to facilitate a hotel development.

The hotel proposal for property at 8100 Young Road is undergoing scrutiny for its form and character.

Development variance permits being considered include a reduction of total off-street parking from 76 to 68 stalls, to build the two-storey service station and drive-thru restaurant, and five-storey hotel, which will be visible from the freeway.

A second variance is to increase the hotel building height from 10 metres to 24 metres.

If the variances are approved by council, a development permit could subsequently come up Tuesday night as a late item to approve form and character.

Once the applicant’s development permit goes through, the next step is getting a building permit.

“From my point of view the location is good for a hotel, and will provide visitors with entertainment in the evening at the Casino,” said Allison Colthorp, executive director of Tourism Chilliwack. “I look forward to hearing more about it.”

Proximity to both the highway, and to the Chances casino, would certainly add value to the visitor experience in Chilliwack, she said.

The proposed 68-room hotel will add to the inventory of rooms in Chilliwack, which is now at 578 units, in 10 hotels.

The largest hotel in town, the Coast Chilliwack, has 110 rooms.
