This is large lot, too bad this tower could not be higher.

Some people wish the opposite.

Man Killed After Fall at Hell's Kitchen Construction Site

Quote:
A 30-year-old man was killed after he fell down an elevator shaft at a Hell's Kitchen construction site Tuesday afternoon, NYPD said.

The man, whose name is not being released until his family is notified, fell at 577 Ninth Ave., near 41st Street, about 12:41 p.m., according to police.

Sources said the man had been working without a harness near a hole on the fourth floor that lead all the way to the ground when he fell down it and landed on his back.

He was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Workers at the site were crying outside of the construction site Tuesday afternoon.

Staff at the subcontracting company Rovini Concrete Corp. declined to comment.

The general contractor, BRF Construction Corp., did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

BRF was fined $10,000 in March for failing to secure the site because a worker was spotted climbing a 15- to 20-foot wall without a harness, according to the Department of Buildings.

"This is a non-union job and we have been monitoring it for some time. These companies feed an underground economy," said Gerald Matthews of the District Council of Carpenters.

At least some form of street wall is retained.

Good to see that these empty voids in the Midtown mass are about to be filled in. That area always feels empty, but not for long. Lots of crummy low rise structures need to be redeveloped.

Good for the area in terms of increased pedestrian activity.
