If I remember correctly, this restaurant was across the street (on SUNSET BLVD.) from the Hollywood Athletic Club.





Here's a closer view of the arched entrance.



As you can see, this was obviously taken on the same day. (same parked car)

Was the name really just 'Gourmet Restaurant'? That seems awfully generic.

The business appears at 6550 Sunset in the CDs from 1929 to 1942 - it was Shaefer's Battery & Ignition. The 1929 listing included the following:

SHAEFER'S (Geo H Shaefer), Battery, Carburetor, Electrical and Speedometer Repairing, Authorized Distributor for A C Products.
Auto-Light, Delco, North-East, Remy and Exide, 6550 Sunset Blvd Cor Seward, Phone Gladstone 3636

Hmmmmmm--the way the branches hang, those trees look like young California Peppers to me, e_r!

The tallest limb at center is I think indeed a Eucalyptus, but coming from somewhere behind the row of Peppers (maybe in the courtyard)???

Thomson(not to be confused with the Law and Order guy and former Senator) and Marion also built "The Enchanted Hill" on a ridge between Beverly Glen and Benedict Canyon. Here's a piece on it and it's sad demise.

It looks so familiar, near Franklin/Argyle area, but no searches for Arco stations solved it. Also looked down near Beverly. Stumped. Closest guess is one wing of Hollywood Tower apartments. Was it possibly demoed for the 101?

The Hollywood Freeway was open in 1960, and I think the date of the picture is pretty close to have been taken in 1960, based on the station wagon at the Richfield station. The Hollywood Tower apartments is still along side the 101 on Franklin. Looking at the 1940 aerial it doesn't appear that any part of the Hollywood Tower apartments were demoed for the construction of the Hollywood Freeway. It looks familiar, but I'm stumped as well.

That blurry photo is new to me. I'd love to find a clearer one.

Seeing that first photo again reminded me that back in 2014 I was contacted by someone named Matthew Sullivan from an architectural firm called Lee and Associates. They (or at least he) was involved in the restoration of the Free Thompson building. I haven't driven past it in a while to see how it looks these days or how extensive it the restoration was. Has anyone been there lately?

I'm no tree expert but do pepper trees grow to be that tall? I am an Aussie so I am familiar with eucalyptus trees but they don't look very eucalyptus-y to me. And olive trees tend to be shorter and rounder than that, don't they? At least the one on the other side of the street from me does.

In the 90's I knew someone that lived in the Hollywood Tower for awhile. I only visited once...it felt like an old place with a lot of history.

Gripe: In 2016 Disney's California Adventure theme park remodeled the favorite ride "Hollywood Tower of Terror" which resembled the actual Hollywood Tower building. It's one attraction I really loved there. But California Adventure is losing more and more of it's "California" theme. This attraction was changed to: The Guardians of the Galaxy Mission: Breakout! How California is that?
