The caption at calisphere/UCLA is "Trucks in the L.A.P.D. parade heading towards the Coliseum, Los Angeles, 1937."

...

At the upper right of the photo, next to a decaying house, a sign says “It’s in the” and nothing more.
That was the top half of the "It's in the Examiner" sign above the Broadway Tunnel.

By the way, does anyone know what those rows of things that look like grave markers are? There wasn't a cemetery there, was there?
This 1953 image isn't very clear because it was taken from City Hall to show the smog, but it does also show that the "grave markers" were just a couple of parking lots (far left of the picture below). I think they look different because the bay markings are at an angle. The lot on the other side of Temple has them parallel/perpendicular to the road.

Police Show

1931 LAPD Show Poster. The shows were a fund raiser for programs. The ocrs. were expected to donate their time for free (common in that day). The band is made up of Ocrs., and civilians who play for free. Today the Ocrs. would demand time and a half or be out of town and unable to be there. Times have changed. LAPD did Christmas parties for underprivege kids also.

More puzzling than the police saxophonist is the presence of a truck labeled “Bacone College Red Men.” Bacone is a small liberal arts school in Muskogee, Oklahoma serving native Americans. It was established in 1880 by Baptist missionaries to the Cherokees and looks like it will go out of business this fall for lack of funding. Trivia note: some years ago, they changed their mascot from “Red Men” to “Warriors.”

I have no idea why they would be invited to participate in an LA police parade, but there they are, dressed up in Hollywood-Indian-style outfits.

[...]

LAT via newspapers.com
_________________________________________________________________
The "why exactly" the "Bacone College Red Men" were invited to Los Angeles might be unclear, but the last lines in the above article clip says that they were singers and would be appearing in the Coliseum show.

BOYS' BAND PARADES
The California Boys' Band, costumed in gay red and white, came next, followed by a fleet of Times trucks carrying a number of the participants who appeared in the show.
A busload of Indian singers from Bacone College, Oklahoma, was last in the long procession...

___

Looks like they were relegated to the rear. Wonder what they sang?
I also wonder what the California Boys' Band was. Not a great name for search purposes.

That article also says "At least fifteen stars of the screen appeared before the mammoth crowd at the Coliseum last night...", which begs the question, dear article writer, who were they? Your readers want to know some details.

It does give the name, however, of the girl the officers in the photo (in Lorendoc's post) are "leering at" as high-stepping drum majorette Betty Atkinson.

Excellent post Lorendoc!

Unless I am reading this wrong, there was a movie made of the extravaganza!

God forbid I show ER's photo of homeless people and his photo of security gated old apartments.

The motto seems to be: Attack, attack, attack CBD. Ignore the others.

Its all very hilarious.

I kind of doubt that tax dollars were at work (unlike today when tax dollars are spread like manure), the city politicians were very adept at getting the well to do to pay for all of these events. In this day and age it is the middle class who foots the bill for cell phones, groceries, clothing, lodging, medical, legal and who knows what is next for those that can't or don't want to work. Kind of makes you want to stop collecting a retirement check so you can get all this free stuff and not have to pay taxes.

Then I think people should stop voting for the politicians who give all the tax cuts (and run up government deficits) to those corporations and people who don't need them and vote for those who'll pay more attention to the middle class.

Sound like a better idea?

mystery location for a Saturday evening.

"RPPC 1910s FIESTA DE LOS ANGELES Calif."

Ebay

As you can see, the decorated car is parked next to a rather substantial building with a top row of arched windows.

Here's a closer look at what's visible in the distance on the far right side of the photo.

DETAIL

...well that didn't help much.

*adjusts magnification setting*

DETAIL

Not sure what's going on with the man and the box. It looks like he accidentally stepped on it and now he's hopping around on one leg.

(could this be Chaplin?)

You're exhausting me CBD. ....It's obvious by your recent posts that you're trolling us.

Yes, politics are a 'No Go' on NLA.

And I shouldn't have applauded Martin's response to Hollywood Graham. Everyone's opinion should be respected (within reason).

ER, you've posted to me some very mean spirited public responses to a couple of my posts.

Interesting that you honor martin with an applaud gif. but when I mention it, you regret it.

Smog photos are OK?

BTW, I am not ''trolling'' anyone and never have. I'm posting comments of fact which are not trollish.

I would communicate privately but your inbox is so loaded that it refuses messages.
