Malmö seaside development August 2019

Malmö is the 3rd largest city in Sweden, with about 330 000 inhabitants, situated near the southernmost west edge of the country. Malmö is a former industrial city, transforming fast to an international university city. The city has besides the beautiful historical core, no less then 5 districts with very modern and large buildings, some highrises; Malmö Live (opposite the city center), Station area Triangeln (city center) Västra Hamnen/Dockan (seaside, where you find Turning Torso) and Hyllie (south outskirts near Öresundsbron).

With this thread I wanted to show the latest developments along the seaside. I chosed to focus on the area around the new concert hall/skyscraper hotel called Malmö Live, completed in 2015. The fountain and spruces around the new square Dag Hammarskölds torg are new the residential highrises are only a few years old. A new markethall just opened in an old, ruined building. The area is often nicknamed “Malmhattan” and reminds a bit of some American city.

Note that these are only snapshots with a cellphone camera, most of them taken during a walk with my new baby that was very curious about the buildings.

If you are interested to look at Turning Torso, or the older part of Malmö, you can watch it here:

LIMHAMN:

In Limhamn, formerly a suburb, now a wealthy district, in southern end of Malmö, some new residential highrises and a private marina for some residences, was just built at the Småbåtshamnen, small boat marina. You can also see Öresundsbron, the long bridge to Copenhagen (Scandinavia’s tallest structure, it opened in 2000) from here.

Anyway, you should have seen how Malmö looked in the 80s, a boring industrial city where a shipyard crane (now moved to South Korea) and a church tower were the tallest buildings. A sleeping zombie city. The only negative aspect is that the crime rate and integration problems has risen tremendously after the Öresundsbron bridge to Denmark was built in 2000, but the city looks much better on the outside. The old town, that I might have to show you some day, is beautiful, and was already in the 80s.

It was built in 1973, but its in the outskirts of Hyllile, near the Öresund bridge. In the 90s when you visited it was very lonely, the water tower was surrounded by fields!
