The Most Important Floor at Aura

Construction workers at Aura have been working diligently these last several weeks of summer in preparation to pour the 5th floor. Usually, it takes a couple of weeks of installation and pouring of concrete for a large retail podium floor plate. In Aura's case it is taking a bit more time and here's why....

The 5th floor at Aura is the most important structural floor of the entire building since it transfers the loads from the 71 storeys of residential floors above through to the foundations.

Seen above, significant quantities of rebar (rods or bars used for reinforcement in concrete pouring) and post-tensioned tendons are required for this 2500 mm thick transfer slab (the 5th floor) along with detailed coordination and installation between several trade workers. This enormous task has taken the better part of the summer months to complete.

This 5th floor transfer slab is being poured in sections and the first two sections were completed at the end of August. The remaining section is being prepared and the entire 5th floor slab will be completed within a few weeks, after which you’ll see Aura continue to grow quickly during the fall.

Regarding the glass quality, here’s an old quote from the following article:

http://www.collegeparkcondos.com/pdf...25_07_Star.pdf

The Aura design review was initiated by Canderel after its first proposal was rejected by the city in August 2006. Renowned architects Eberhard Zeidler and Rene Menkes were brought in to begin the process. Three more respected names Bruce Kuwabara, Josh Chaiken and Jon Pickard were added later when the panel became a joint process with the city.

Canderel president Michael La Brier says he’s enthusiastic about the finished design, which led to a settlement at the OMB last week. “I would never have used low-iron glass if the panel hadn’t suggested it,” he says. “It’s a more expensive, high-quality glass. It will mean that when you look up from the street, the windows will look very clear and transparent.

Canderel certainly went beyond their comfort zone, choosing such high quality materials for this project. But then again, it is there signature building!
nice article here..

The forming is starting to appear over the podium, when viewed from Yonge Street on the east sidewalk.

Won't be too much longer before the tower is visible over the podium clearly.

No sweat, Caltrane. Hard to get an original angle from the street. It's going to be something when it begins to rise, though. Massive presence already at street level. Going to be something to look forward through the winter, seeing this thing go vertical.

From your photos we can see the forming of the fifth level above the podium. Also by next year summer/fall the retail space will be open and the tower itself might only be up around 35 to 40 floors. (Halfway Up)

Caltrane...Toronto is the new Dubai? What an offense it is to put Toronto, a city with so much history and character together with some desert town that just recently appeared on the map. A city in which more than 70% of the residents live far below the poverty line. Why would you do that?

Aura is a beauty! Can't wait to see he forming.

Im pretty sure he just means its the new Dubai because of how much high rise development is going. Dubai's construction has slowed and toronto's has exploded!! Hence the new Dubai

Yes exactly, I just meant in the amount of new construction, Toronto has overtaken Dubai. Or you can click the link in my signature and read the article.
