World’s Newest Cities

World’s Newest Cities

By Mariana Zapata on January 9, 2020

@SOM_Design/Twitter

Be it because of climate change or rapidly developing technology, the face of the world is inevitably changing. In an attempt to stay ahead of the curve and meet the future head on, many nations — mostly in Asia — are investing in planned cities, or cities that are built on purpose rather than through organic growth. Some of these are meant to lead the way in environmental initiatives, others are trying to solve the issue of overpopulation in megacities, and some simply want to show off their new and shiny tech.

Although controversy surrounds many of these cities, there is little doubt that they will shape the urban experience in the years to come. Join the 21st century by getting to know some of the world’s newest cities, as well as cities that are set to debut in the near future.

What counts as a "new city" Im sure there are plenty of suburban towns in the sunbelt that have been founded in the last 20 years.

Here is an article from 2011 talking about cities founded like ...in 2011: https://247wallst.com/special-report...newest-cities/

That thought entered my mind too, but going by the article, I figure the OP wanted to call attention to newly built cities instead of already established communities creating new city governments; the latter is a "new city," yes, but I think the OP was thinking more of new cities physically built/being built from scratch out of nowhere.

Interesting thread idea..Kudos OP.

It makes me wonder which new city sprouting up from nowhere will someday achieve some sort of legacy/household name status, have an iconic building or 2, and host a future Olympics even for what that's worth..Like a good spaghetti sauce cooking, they should grow very slow and organically.

Rawadi is an interesting case in the West Bank I hadn't heard about until now. There are pictures of it on google maps already. Although it is still very much under construction, it apparently already has Nautica, Gant, Lacoste, and Timberland stores that you can see in those photos... so, well on it's way to becoming... an outlet mall in suburban New Jersey... I guess?

My former squadron went there 4 times on their last cruise. It's a tiny town trying to be a midsized city.

Is it fair to say that Las Vegas is the newest city/metro of a large size in the US? Las Vegas wasn't founded until 1906 (or 1909, I can't remember), and through World War II is was still a small town. Pretty much all the growth has been in the last 75 years, with about half of all growth in the last 25 years.

Exactly.

BTW, Nursultan isn't a "new" city. It used to be Astana and was renamed Nursultan in 2019.

Anyway... it would be interesting to see a list of the top 50 metros in the US listed by youngest to oldest principal cities.

Rawabi, Palestine.

This is Palestine's attempt at building permanent settlements, without the threat of bulldozing then appropriation - Israel only grudgingly agreed to connect up a water supply last year.

Babcock Ranch, FL is the First Solar Powered City in the US built in 2015

https://www.babcockranch.com/

Every city in Florida should be solar powered, but at least it's a start.
