Where did I find them? Hmmm...now you've got me thinking. I roam around these here interwebs fairly regularly...following my nose...as you do...

Thanks for the effort. There are listings for Charley's Cafe and Club but so far, no diner. "STEAKS . . . There's a reason."

Maybe viewing the scene again would help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Zw-II_vBMU The auto in the brief scene appears to have a CA plate, but maybe not. Still, the shot could have been taken anywhere, including places outside of LA, proper.

Park la Brea still claims to be the largest apartment complex west of the Mississippi. 160 acres and 4,255 apartments. Planned in 1939 and finished in 1952. The Park La Brea townhouses were designed by Leonard Schultz & Son (New York) with associate architect Earl T. Heitschmidt in 1941. The Towers were designed by Leonard Schultz Associates with consulting architects Stanton + Kaufmann in 1948.

According to Wikipedia "The street layout was created in a masonic pattern as a reference to the masonic heritage of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company [the original developers]".

I'm not really up on Masonic imagery, so I can't confirm or deny that.

Thanks for this shot of Stan's, Godzilla. It looks like Stan's took over several existing drive-ins in the 1950s, including the old Carpenter's site at Sunset and Vine. This one used to be Simon's.

Actually, this isn't the same "25er"... it seems that the 25er bars must have been Stan's cocktail sideline. There was a Stan's at the NW corner of Wilshire and Western, which can be glimpsed in pictures below; ER's view, in which a bit of the Wilshire-Western drive-in's canopy can be seen, shows the 25er next to that Stan's, rather than the one at the SW corner of Wilshire & Hoover. In the back ground at far left is 3832 Wilshire (where southbound Manhattan Place ends at Wilshire)--see below and here: http://wilshireboulevardhouses.blogs...lease-see.html). Above the 25er in ER's shot is the domed roof of the Wilshire Arts building, and the billboards above.

^^^Interesting, the 25er.

Reminds me of an old bar in Old Pasadena that still exists, called the 35er, which, from what my friend tells me, she refers to sometimes as the "Dirty Diver." She likes to go to that bar. I've never been to it myself, though I've driven and walked by it countless times.

The intersection in the upper center of the photo above -- a couple of hundred feet northeast of the Hollywood Fwy, is Sunset Blvd & Wilton Place.

The street level photo below from 1976 shows that intersection looking south. You can see one of the four-story Metromedia Square buildings in the background. KPOL was a "beautiful music" AM station at 1540 on the dial. It now has the call letters KMPC and is an all Korean language station. Many of you will remember KMPC as formerly being at 710 on the dial and owned by Gene Autry.

This was the only picture I found of Harry Carpenter's at Western and Wilshire when I looked about 18 months ago. I haven't looked since.
