It seems to rain almost every time the parade is held, but there were no clouds in sight in this year’s parade, so turnout was pretty good.

The parade has been heavily commercialized over the years, with local corporations like Old Navy, Visa, PG&E, and Wells Fargo being some of the mainstays, together with Bank of America, Cathay Pacific, McDonald’s, Coca Cola, AT&T, Samsung, Hyundai, Ford, Toyota, and Harrah’s. The signature sponsor of the festival and parade is Southwest Airlines.

Plenty of local high school and university bands are also part of the parade…

What’s a cultural parade without a pageant?

The final procession of the parade always belongs to Leung’s White Crane (梁館白鶴), a local martial arts and lion dancing group. There are a few other groups like Yau Kung Moon (柔功門) and Chung Ngai (中藝), but White Crane is by far the largest and most influential.

The finale is Gum Lung (金龍), the 250-foot long Golden Dragon…

2013 World Baseball Classic Semi-Final 1: Puerto Rico vs. Japan
2013.03.17

Missed the first few innings as I was preoccupied with some yummy Indian food, but I finally made it down to my usual spot at the ballpark behind right field.

2013 Cherry Blossom Festival Grand Parade
2013.04.21

San Francisco’s Japantown has been busy the past two weekends for the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, and the culmination of all the celebrations was the Grand Parade last Sunday. It’s one of the few times of the year that the casual observer can see the Japanese community together in Japantown, as only a handful of elderly folks still live in the community… Most have assimilated and spread across the greater Bay Area. Recently, Japantown merchants seem to be much more proactive about holding events year-round, and the opening of Daisō (Japanese dollar store) has been generating a lot of foot traffic, so the place isn’t completely dead nowadays.

There’s always a lot of schoolchildren in the parade, with many of the groups coming from bilingual / bicultural schools.

San Francisco and Ōsaka have a comparatively well-known sister-city relationship, with the then-mayor of Ōsaka City visiting a few years ago… Never knew that Oakland and Fukuoka were sister cities, though.

I suppose this is supposed to be a modern take on kabuki

A group of Awa-odori dancers. They seemed a bit more of what you might expect at a traditional Japanese festival.

Okinawan group

There are quite a few language immersion programs in the city’s public schools, but they are exclusively geared towards Spanish and Cantonese / Mandarin (with the exception of one Korean program). However, a few of the schools, like this one, have Japanese bilingual / bicultural programs.

The official festival pageant is sponsored by JAL. Japan’s first international flight post-WWII was Tōkyō–Honolulu–San Francisco, and the Tōkyō–San Francisco flights are still known as JL001/JL002.

I suppose like most parades focused on immigrant cultures, this one is more a Japanese American parade than a Japanese parade… However, there is some participation from the homeland, and this particular mikoshi (palanquin) was donated by a fairly famous shrine in Tōkyō (Kanda Myōjin). Priests from the home shrine visit every year to perform the special rites during the festival.

The finale of the festival is this taru-mikoshi formed of sake barrels. The guy on top is in pretty much every parade.

You're so knowledgeable! And I admire your dedication to public transportation. I just moved to south bay from out of state myself and I drove to Pacifica a few months ago. Next time I'm gonna take bus. I like being green.

Do you have to be really patient on a bus/train cuz it takes so much longer time than driving?

Hrm, SamTrans isn't bad, but it's not especially great either. I live close to BART, which means I just need to get to either Daly City or Colma BART for decent weekend bus service to Pacifica. For sure, it takes longer than driving, but I don't own a car anyways.
