Design Advice has been requested for the Providence Park Expansion:

Quote:
Expansion to the stadium on the east side. The design engages the SW 18th avenue sidewalk with a covered arcade, four new levels, new roof.

Design Advice scheduled for May 11th:

Quote:
Design Advice Request for a 4,000 seat expansion of Providence Park Stadium. The design includes removing the existing covered seating area along SW 18th Avenue and constructing a new 100’ height covered seating and arcade structure. The new addition will project 10-feet over the SW 18th Avenue Right-of-Way, and include additional facilities such as balconies, restaurants, bathrooms and kitchen areas.

Yeah but I read that they planned to add a couple thousand seats there that would extend up over the service road. It would stay below the MAC balcony from how I understand it...

Since those would be cheaper seats, the return on doing it on the East side was much better than on the south side. They may do that later.

It's like they saw the renderings for the block next door and thought... "I see you trying to get some free views into our stadium, how about no."

Looks good though.

With that new canopy banking sound back into the stadium, that place is going to become even more loud and raucous than it already is! Very cool!

Is there the same attachment to this structure as there is to the Memorial Coliseum? I'd kinda like to see a phased total redevelopment of this park.

Spent many a day of my youth going to old Civic Stadium to watch the Beavers, Beavers vs. Pirates(Parent team), Vikings, Old Timers games Timbers, etc. I felt this old yard ought to be torn down, then the first re-do happened and it was pretty nice. But I must say, this expansion design is fabulous. Way to go.

I'll admit this idea is crazy but what about finding a way to save and reuse the old canopy above the stands? Move it over the Max station and tracks at either 18th and Yamhill or Morrison. Not sure what the size of that thing is but reusing it nearby rather than "recycling" would make a lot of sense.

Portland Timbers Unveil Providence Park Expansion Plan

One of the great soccer stadiums in North America is about to get a significant upgrade.

The Portland Timbers unveiled on Wednesday their plan to add 4,000 seats to Providence Park with a massive, four-teared expansion of the stadium's east side. The $50 million privately-financed project could, pending City approval, be finished by the start of the 2019 MLS season.

“Providence Park is one of the most special stadiums in sports,” said Mike Golub, Timbers and Thorns president of business in a club release. “With our proposed expansion, we will enhance the incomparable fan experience and intimacy and provide the opportunity for some of the more than 13,000 members of the waiting list to become season ticket holders.”

After exploring expansion possibilities for well over a year, the Timbers partnered with Allied Works Architecture to produce a plan — influenced by the iconic near-vertical stands at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires and the Shakespearean Globe Theater in London — that will raise the stadium's capacity to over 25,000.
...continues at the Portland Mercury.

It's a whole lot bigger than you think it is.

Slightly related noob question:

Has anyone ever proposed a mural for the north side of the Multnomah Athletic Club?

Seems like a great opportunity to beautify the big blank back of that building and add some visual energy to the park.
