I really hope the Station Square redevelopment can lead to the amalgamation of that part of the old mall to Metrotown mall itself, thereby expanding the Metrotown Mall. It'll be pretty cool if they can rival the Mall of America in terms of the number of retail stores (Mall of America is absolutely huge, but that's because most of that mall area is occupied by the Nickelodeon amusement park in the middle of it).

It'd be cool for bragging rights, but that's about it. The mall is already a gigantic obstacle in the street grid and expanding Metrotown westward would cut off yet another route between Kingsway and the Skytrain. Makes a bad situation worse from a pedestrian standpoint, especially when the mall is closed.

Or, better yet, a skybridge to the Skytrain itself so everyone isn't crammed into that one tiny little walkway. Or is that supposed to be part of the station renovation once Translink finds a few million under the sofa cushions?
that is the situation now, but you think if Translink were smart they would have the station square development chip in a sizable sum for the station upgrade / connections, such as what is happening in Richmond now.
Who knows, maybe they have tried and the developers has simply said no.
With the current financial situation Translink is in, I have doubt whether the planned new sky bridge that is supposed to connect the West station house to Station Square will ever get built.
Translink doesn't have the ability to ask Anthem/Beadie for funds for the redevelopment of the station. The only ones that could influence them would be the city of Burnaby. The said I would imagine that there will be funds diverted to the western end of the station as it's in their financial interest to facilitate access.
The whole parking lot outside Boston Pizza and Red Robin was closed today and a tall crane machiney with wrecking ball was assembled. The machiney is now sitting at the garbage area behind the old Sleep Country's location.

With the amount of closures they've had in the past few weeks they likely don't need to maintain the parking ratio they currently have so they are probably able to start demolition immediately.
Might be making way for a sales centre or just starting construction in general.
It can't come soon enough. Station Square is such an anti-pedestrian experience currently, with lots of people walking diagonally across the parking lots, or on narrow sidewalks next to trucks unloading at night.
No demolition happened.
Yesterday workers combined 2 tall cranes into 1 extermely tall crane to hang a small platform. I learned later from other people it was used to do some high altitude photo shoot of the mall area(for marketing purpose?). The crane structure was disassembled this morning and carried away.
Looks amazing, I cannot believe that the proposal we saw several months ago is going to fruition! Metrotown is going to look totally different in 10 years.
I think the cluster of tall, ominous appearing towers looks great. There is no design or aesthetic code that suggests you cannot go taller than most buildings in the principal CBD of Vancouver.
PS: What is with all the metrosexuals in the second street view rendering....?
From first glance the towers look like a copy & past from the SOLO DISTRICT near Brentwood Mall. Once the project is complete, that part of Metrotown will be a whole better place.
