Calgary a quoi à côté?

It would be pretty surprising if Montreal got this rather than Toronto, but then again my take from the article is that it's not a done deal yet. It could open up interesting connections to India, if it happens.

Rising Canadian dollar a drag, but Vancouver easily outpaces Toronto, Montreal

By Bruce Constantineau, Vancouver Sun July 31, 2013

Arising Canadian dollar has hurt Vancouver International Airport's efficiency rating among North American airports, but YVR remains the top-performing major airport in Canada and the sixth-best performer in North America, according to University of B.C. aviation experts.

In previous years, Vancouver topped all North American airports in the annual ATRS Global Airport Benchmarking Report, but higher costs caused by a rising Canadian currency have forced a slight drop in its continental ranking.

"YVR remains a consistently good performer, certainly when compared with any other Canadian airport," said UBC Sauder School of Business professor Tae Oum, who led the study.

The report considered several factors in determining operating efficiency, including productivity, cost competitiveness, and airport user charges.

Oum said the most efficient airports get more than half their total revenues from nonaviation sources such as concessions, parking, office rent and real estate development. That can lead to lower charges for airlines and passengers.

The report found Vancouver derived 54 per cent of total 2011 revenues from non-aviation sources, compared with 46 per cent at Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, and just 33 per cent at Pearson International Airport in Toronto.

Oum said Toronto's airport efficiency has been hurt by a massive, multi-year expansion project that did not allow for a lot of new retail space to boost non-aviation revenues. Pearson Airport completed an eight-year, $4.4-billion expansion in 2008.

"They have high costs, so they have to charge high prices, otherwise they'd lose money," Oum said.

He noted Toronto charged nearly $2,000 in landing fees for a Boeing 737-800 last year, compared with about $700 in Montreal and $400 in Vancouver.

Oum said Toronto's landing fees are the highest in North America and Europe, and not far behind the fees charged at Tokyo's Narita airport and Osaka's Kansai airport.

The total amount airports charged to airlines in 2011 worked out to $14.11 US per passenger in Vancouver, $21.98 US per passenger in Montreal and $33.34 US per passenger in Toronto. Victoria airport had the lowest per-passenger costs in Canada, at about $7 US.

While Vancouver was considered the sixth-most efficient North American airport, Montreal and Toronto were both around 65th place among 77 U.S. and Canadian airports examined in the study.

The report studied 195 airports and 26 airport groups in North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania.

Fortifies airline's position as the leading transborder carrier

MONTREAL, Aug. 8, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Air Canada today announced that its current seasonal flights between Montreal and San Francisco will be extended to year-round flights beginning in November 2013. All flights will be operated with Airbus A319 aircraft featuring Executive Service, complimentary seatback entertainment, the ability to collect Aeroplan miles and lounge access for qualified customers. Air Canada's Montreal-San Francisco flights are timed to offer convenient connections with the carrier's international flights from Montreal-Trudeau airport to London, Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt, and Geneva, as well as its domestic network including Ottawa, Québec City, and Halifax.

With the extension of our San Francisco flights on a year-round basis, in addition to our daily Los Angeles service, Air Canada is solidifying its position as the only airline offering non-stop service between Montreal and California, with up to five flights per day," said Marcel Forget, Air Canada's Vice President, Network Planning.

The last couple of times I took a flight (early morning ones at that), the line to pass through U.S customs was so long that it stretched out past the check in area and into the lobby. They kept having to pull people out of line so they wouldn't miss their flights. The good part was not having to be drawn and quartered on those body scan things. Apparently terrorism is not a priority during peak times.

New non-stop routes from Montreal to Barcelona and Nice next summer on Air Canada Rouge.

Quote:
Air Canada Adds Montreal-Barcelona and Montreal-Nice non-stop flights for Summer 2014 Schedule

MONTREAL, Oct. 8, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Air Canada announced today it is boosting its international Summer 2014 services to Europe from Montreal with the launch of seasonal non-stop flights between Montreal and Nice, France and the re-introduction of Montreal-Barcelona service. Flights will be operated by Air Canada's leisure carrier subsidiary, Air Canada rouge. In addition, the airline will expand the availability of its new international Premium Economy cabin with its introduction on Montreal-London Heathrow flights during the peak summer travel season. Air Canada will also deploy larger aircraft from its international widebody fleet on flights from Montreal to Brussels and Geneva in order to meet travel and cargo demand during the summer.

Seats on these new Air Canada and Air Canada rouge flights are now available for purchase at aircanada.com and through travel agents.

As new Boeing 777-300ER and 787 aircraft enter the Air Canada mainline fleet, Air Canada will continue growing Air Canada rouge to reach a total of up to 50 aircraft, as demand warrants. The growth of its leisure carrier, in tandem with the mainline fleet renewal and international network expansion, is a key element of Air Canada's overall strategy for sustainable, profitable growth, both at the mainline and leisure carrier.

"The expansion of Air Canada's global network to include new European destinations is a significant turning point in Air Canada's international growth strategy. With the addition of Air Canada rouge service from Montreal to popular holiday destinations such as Nice and Barcelona, we are offering customers great new options when making their travel plans beginning next summer," said Ben Smith, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer.

"The growth of Air Canada's international network, within forecasts previously announced, is possible due to our ability to deploy capacity and continue growing at significantly lower incremental cost. Air Canada rouge's successful inaugural season underscores its growing popularity among vacation- goers. Similarly, the introduction of our new international Premium Economy cabin has also met with extremely positive customer feedback and we are pleased to continue its introduction with our five specially-configured Boeing 777-300ER aircraft on routes such Montreal-London where market demand calls for a larger supply of Economy and Premium Economy seats, in addition to continuing to offer Executive First business class service.

"As Canada's preferred airline by business travellers, and voted Best Airline in North America for the fourth consecutive year, we are pleased to offer a wide range of premium products as well as high value options together with Air Canada rouge. We will continue leveraging Air Canada's strengths in fleet, product and network while responding to demand on both a price and cost competitive basis to serve customers across Canada and around the world," concluded Mr. Smith.

Said James Cherry, president and CEO "Aéroports de Montréal is pleased with these new non-stop services and increased capacity on existing destinations as it reinforces Montréal-Trudeau's appeal as an efficient hub to Europe."

Air Canada will have taken delivery of five new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft for the mainline fleet between June 2013 and February 2014, and the first three of 37 Boeing 787 aircraft by the summer of 2014. Air Canada is scheduled to take delivery of six 787-8 aircraft in 2014 and the remaining 31 787-8 and -9 aircraft between 2015 and 2019.

The news of the flights to Nice and Barcelona was published yesterday.

However, just posting this because Air Transat is now offering a direct Montreal-Prague flight starting next summer. Very happy to hear that. I highly recommend Prague to anyone who has never been. $914 is pretty good for a round-trip direct flight to Prague.

Transat s'envole vers Prague

Great news! There are a lot of new destinations coming this year. Perhaps YUL will make it to 15 million passengers sooner than we think.
