For the brain hurt, I recommend grabbing a few beers. The ethanol kills off the weak brain cells, allowing the strong to propagate.

Construction of the Sandman Hotel appears to be going well. A lot of foundation work going on over the past week or so.

I noticed this as well. It's good to see some progression on a few projects in the region.

ACAN Windows have filed for bankruptcy.
Though to be honest, that building in Paradise always looked kinda sketchy, continually run down looking.

Paradise Getting New Hotel, Eyes City Status

VOCM News
Feb 22, 2016

Quote:
The Town of Paradise is getting its first big hotel, but losing a landmark in the process.

The Crossroads Motel, which has been at the St. John's/Mount Pearl/Paradise juncture for decades, will be no more. In its place will be a new 59-room hotel as well as a separate restaurant and bar.
....

Good on Paradise. Crossroads might be a landmark, but not for the right reasons that's for sure! The article also mentions that Paradise is talking about applying for city status.

Delays, delays and more delays.

Seems as if the developer wants to move forward with the original (the better one in my opinion) proposal for the Brookfield Plains condo that is part in St. John's and part in Mount Pearl. (Don't get me started on the stupidity of that border...lol).

http://www.thetelegram.com/News/Loca...blic-meeting/1

The decision has been made by our esteemed council to have more public information sessions and God knows how many more hearings. If there is ever a time we need economic activity this is it and my guess is these delays will probably push it out well past another construction season.

Anyone know of any leads for a new Mount Pearl hotel? I know they've been looking to attract one for a while and they even mentioned it in their budget 2016

Quote:
To serve our business community, we have committed to working hard to try and secure a new hotel for our City close to our business parks, as well as to fulfill our sport tourism strategies. Work towards this initiative has been ongoing since 2014 and we are committing to continuing our efforts until a new hotel is constructed.

Also the sandman hotel is springing up like you guys mentioned and it looks like they will have convention space in the hotel (this means larger than just meeting rooms) as well as two connected restaurants and one stand alone restaurant. Apparently Denny's is a chain that very often accompanies this chain.

Sandman Hotels are owned by the Gaglardis (Northland properties) from BC. They also own a number of restaurant chains including Moxie's, Denny's Canada, Chop Steakhouse, etc.

Being from BC... I would very happy to see a Moxie's, Denny's, or Shark Club accompany the new Sandman! I've been missing Moxie's Ceasar Salad, Calamari, and Saturday and Sunday Brunch!!

Was going by Kelsey Drive the other day and one of the two buildings in which Suncor is moving into is progressing nicely. It's neat seeing how the prefab concrete walls are all put into place without any structural steel there first.

Here is the new Crossroads motel. Quite an improvement from the old one for sure.
They have also built a strip mall next door to it too and is advertising the coming of Charlies Steak House there.

Has anyone visited the new North Atlantic/Orange Store in the Southlands yet on the corner of Great Sothern Dr. And Southlands Blvd? It's built in a very odd way. Facing backwards or sideways to the main roads which makes it super dangerous when entering the parking lot from Great Southern Drive which is the only main entrance. You cannot see cars or pedestrians as they leave, coming around the corner of the building as you entering. The Southlands Dr entrance is not quite as bad but is limited. You can only enter driving south coming from Mt Pearl and no left turn from Southlands Blvd. How on earth did this configuration get approved? The building lot seems big enough that they could have built it facing the main roads. It's gonna be even more dangerous when the Dairy Queen opens there and rumoured Dominos. Have mentioned it to the clerks at the Orange Store and they totally agreed with me on how dangerous this is.

Looks like the highest priced unit (3 bdrm, 3.5 bath, finished basement) is $285k. Pretty blown away by the pricing. If they could do a similar townhouse development downtown I'd buy one in a heartbeat.

It's amazing what can happen when you can price something at a decent price point and pre-sell them. I drove by there today and the project is well underway, unlike so many other condos/apts that appear as if they are being built by 2 guys on weekends...ie Brine St and Victoria Park.

A reputable developer who isn't looking to make 50% profit per unit helps too!
