Atlantic Yards is mentioned in the article about T3. Basically it depends on how leasing at T3 goes.

Amli Market Street to begin construction this summer

https://atlanta.curbed.com/atlanta-d...offices-retail

Quote:
This summer, construction should begin on a 360-unit residential development by AMLI. Slated to open in 2020, the apartment project is anticipated to fetch some of the highest rental prices in the city, per Hines.

The 10-story development would rise at the corner of 19th and Market Streets, along the exit ramp from the Connector, featuring 25,000 square feet of ground-floor retail.

The location of the proposed Embassy Suites. Hines
Also slated to open in 2020 is a new Embassy Suites Hotel, planned at the corner of 17th and State streets. The hotel would rise adjacent to The Atlantic condos, across the street from the existing Twelve Hotel. In addition to 120 hotel rooms, the development would feature a “high-end steakhouse” facing 17th Street, per plans.

Why couldn't they go more vertical instead of it being so wide? 360+ units would make a decent 20-30 floor tower.

I'm not an architect but I'm pretty sure it's cost. When you get taller, you have increased costs as structure and elevators and HVAC and other systems become more expensive. In this case there is plenty of land available for a lower rise building, so there probably wasn't any incentive to go taller.

That location is probably best with the lower building as it fits in with the shopping part of AS. A new tall building would ideally go on 17th St.

Not everything’s needs to be over 20 stories. This design makes sense and will add nice density to this part ot of AS.

I'm a big fan of low and midrise buildings. Most of the world's great cities are full of them.

Good point. Paris, Stockholm, Lisbon (and on and on), are almost devoid of buildings more than 12 stories, with rare exceptions. Even London was mostly mid-rise until the late 1990's.

Hines moving quickly on next Atlantic Station development

https://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/...-for-6m-2.html

Quote:
After starting work on its T3 West Midtown project last week, Hines is moving quickly on its next Atlantic Station development.

In an appearance before the Fulton County Development Authority, Hines executives said they could launch “Atlantic Yards” this fall. The 515,000-square-foot project would include two buildings, one planned as five-stories, the other as 10.

The project would rise on an empty parking lot across from Atlantic Station’s existing glass office towers. The new project would feature masonry, concrete and steel, plus the look and ambiance of historic buildings, Tori Kerr, a managing director and development partner with Hines, told the Fulton Development Authority. The office building would also include 900 parking spaces.

They probably had a ceremony / publicity event that ironically rarely coincides with the actual start of construction. But if all their plans proceed as stated there will be several projects under construction at the same time over the next couple of years and it's about time.

On another note, wonder how many condos are left at The Atlantic. Maybe some of the other apartment towers will convert after a while.

Work finally started on the T3 site at 17th and State. I live at The Atlantic. They’ve sold over 60% of the units and current leases are not being renewed (unless leased by an individual owner). Remaining units start at around $500,000.
