I believe the coffee co building is the white building in your gsv-, but I'm not sure.

According to the 1956 CD, it's actually the Lingle Bros Coffee Co at 1231 N Broadway. Googling that name leads to a current address of 6500 Garfield Avenue, Bell Gardens. I can only assume that it's the same company.

I think the 1911 CD may have the answer. It lists someone with the name C I Rhodes in the house and sign painters section, so it looks like it was just a bit of free advertising.

I wanted to bring this photo forward to show how well the 1888-1892 (?) Plaza design did over time. There's plenty of benches now and the fountain has gained a central sculpture, but who it is of, I don't know. The encircling brick wall is in place now too.

The Federal Courthouse is nearing completion, dwarfing the Baker Block. Actually the courthouse was finished twice. After completion, funding finally came through from DC for the top two floors and penthouse, so they were added. It opened in 1940.

When the new Federal Courthouse is finally completed, the 75-year-old "unsafe" one will come down. Does that mean we will get the Downey Block back? JK

If the old courthouse was still standing in the picture above, it should be visible between the new Federal Courthouse and the Hall of Justice, but all I see is the Hall of Records.

No, ER, I did not visit that area in the photo. I may have walked passed it when I entered the building lobby.

I always went to some office on the second floor that was for company employees. In that office they took care of things like your employment records, compensation and health insurance. I worked for Rexall for a year at one of their subsidiary companies. I may have visited the main office two or three times. [It was actually DART Industries at that time. DART had bought out the old Rexall company.]

But I did visit the big Rexall drug store in the same building many times during my lunch hour. Sometimes I saw movie and TV stars buying various things. One I remember was a very tall Robert Young. He did not leave a very pleasant public impression as he was basically loud and obnoxious. At least he was the day I observed him at Rexall. He had that...'' I'm a big star'' attitude.

This is where I had a dog one day at lunchtime. Nothing special...very ordinary. Notice the old school chairs at the lower right.

Same here. I used to go there on my lunch hour when I worked at the Beverly Center. It was truly an impressive store.

I ate at Tail-0-Pup too.

The old courthouse was gone. The court was run in temporary bungalows on Poundcake Hill.

I understand the confusion now HossC. The "75-year-old 'unsafe' one" in the above sentence refers to the current Federal Courthouse (hence the reference to the Downey Block). By the "new Federal Courthouse" (that's a clickable link), I meant the one they're building now. The Superior Court was in the bungalows

That looks like the E 4th Street bridge, East LA (unless Chavez Ravine had an identical bridge(?), but I don't recall any infrastructure there.)

All the photo libraries are full of errors (and I make more mistakes than all of them put together). Calisphere has its 3 nice 1911 pix of the Plaza (you just posted the one with the cute shoeshine boys) labeled "unidentified plaza" and now two of the E 4th St bridge as "Chavez Ravine". Where would a bridge go in Chavez Ravine? LOL. I'll send them a note.

There is no information on why the mosque was raided.

That's Nation of Islam Mosque No. 27, founded in 1957. If you recall the cops & FBI were harassing the Nation of Islam in those days. The LAPD shot seven unarmed people at the mosque in 1962, killing one. The incident had a big impact on Malcolm X because of Elijah Mohammad's lack of response. Malcolm eventually broke with the group partly for that reason.
