That's a problem on other one way streets as well. I would think that it would require a synching of lights in the entire area (around the park) and not just one street.

Most of that article was over my head. Is there an update anywhere for the non-lawyer types? I can't believe that shelter is still operating. Hate it so much.

I'm not a lawyer either, but the update seems to be that no matter what the magistrate decides, the decision will either go to a jury trial or be appealed, which either way will eat up a few more years.

Owners can begin Peachtree and Pine shelter eviction process

http://www.ajc.com/news/news/owners-...tlink_homepage

Quote:
A judge has ruled the group that holds the title on the building at Peachtree and Pine Streets in Midtown Atlanta where hundreds of men, women and children bed down nightly can start the court process to evict the Task Force for the Homeless because it had not made a payment in years.

Fulton Superior Court Judge Craig Schwall said in an order Friday that the removal process could begin, but his order did not say that eviction was imminent or even certain.

So no matter what it will still be a shelter?

Initially yes, because they don't want to kick 700+ homeless people out all at once. Another organization will come in and clean everything up and begin the process of moving them to other facilities.

Shelter pays water bill
http://www.ajc.com/news/news/task-fo...-bill-a/nhWdH/

With the exception of Emory Midtown Hospital, the vicinity thereabouts is looking more and more like a war zone.

That's about right..when I drove by during my visit earlier this month, the stretch of Juniper just east of the shelter was definitely disturbing, to put it mildly..the number of people hanging out on the sidewalks and into the street was easily 100+ and there was trash everywhere. It just looked filthy. I didn't realize the magnitude of the negative impact this shelter appears to have on that section of town.

Clearly this shelter is unfortunate. There is no doubt that we have an obligation to look after the homeless - that is not the issue here. First, I believe that any shelter of this size is unfortunate because it concentrates a lot of people in one spot and, despite the best of intentions, severely impacts a large adjacent area negatively. Second, I don't believe this really helps the homeless address their problems effectively. IMO smaller shelters that address particular problems (depression, unemployment, substance abuse, other issues) with a competent staff can make a difference. Simply housing a large number of people does solve immediate needs, but does little in the long run. If this shelter were truly effective in assisting the homeless it would be a benefit to that area; clearly it mainly serves to make that area unattractive for everyone.

It's mind boggling that this place can stay open. It's really a black eye on the city. The sad thing is that I guarantee that on this day next year, the place will still be open and it will still be open on this day two years from now as well.

A Fulton County Superior Court judge ruled in August that the shelter has to pay rent while it fights eviction in court. That decision is now on appeal before the Georgia Supreme Court, and the case will be heard in November. So in addition to finding a benefactor to pay its water bill going forward, the shelter may soon have to find someone to actually pay its rent.

But one of the shelter's accusations in fighting its eviction is that the city (and others) have prevented it from generating donors to pay its rent and other bills, like water. The emergence of donors to pay the $580,000 water bill directly contradicts that argument. Clearly they're able to raise funds when they absolutely need to.

That's some serious change. I wonder who was so generous.
