Woodstock NB Update November 2013

As promised, here are some pics of 3 of the 4 major construction projects going on in Woodstock as of November, 2013. (I didn't take any pictures of the WHS Theatre expansion because there wasn't much to see yet and the fencing keeps you from getting too close.)

First up, Southern Carleton K-8 School:

Next, the L.P. Fisher Library expansion:

Finally, the Civic Centre expansion:

So according to AllNovaScotia it appears that AMHERST will be getting the rumoured new distribution centre for Wal-Mart. It's not confirmed by Wal-Mart but it does appear to be a logical choice. Hopefully if the rumours are true that town will see a population boost that will push it over the 10'000 mark (9'700 in 2006).

Focusing distribution and logistic companies like this in Amherst, Truro and smaller towns in the Halifax-Moncton corridor makes great sense. While the two urban areas will never be truly connected (Folly Pass and Tantramar Marshes make that impossible) growing the connecting population will increase demand for economic co-operation and transportation initiatives.

All that money spent on the interchange in Scoudouc haha. Honestly tho, it needed to happen. It was probably cheaper then rehabilitating the old roads.

I will continue rooting for the Walmart Distribution Centre to be built in greater Moncton until the final announcement is made, but you are quite right in that Amherst (given it's central location) would also be a logical choice and it is good to spread the wealth around somewhat.

Amherst is close enough to Moncton (about as close as Stewiacke is to Halifax) that what is good for Amherst can be good for Moncton as well. In fact this will be a benefit to the whole Three Rivers Region (an old name for the head of the Bay of Fundy, i.e. - Petitcodiac, Memramcook and Shepody rivers).

The only issue with locating it in Amherst is that this will not benefit the NB tax base, which would be disappointing.

I expect the announcement regarding the distribution centre will not be far off……..

Perhaps then they can build it in Aulac lol. That way it's in NB but pretty much in Amherst.

No talk on this forum about Tracadie-Sheila's amalgamation of 17 surrounding LSDs to become the 7th largest population centre in the province? For shame, Atlantic SSP. Not only does this aid Tracadie in their urbanity (as well as the Acadian Peninsula as a whole) but also cuts down on redundancy in the NB muncipal model.

I was disappointed that the CBC didn't even mention it today. A 16,000 person municipality is nothing to sneeze at, and will hopefully be the first of many to follow.

It was a positive news story, hence CBC not carrying it.

This isn't including Hanwell voting to become a rural community after being an LSD. In total, NB has 18 fewer LSDs than we did the day before.

The Fox reported on the changes. On air, they mainly focused on Hanwell, but it is right next door. (And touched on the unfortunate name for LSD's). They also mentioned the other amalgamation up there too, but it was just in passing.

Traffic increases at Canso Canal

Posted on January 8, 2014
Matt Draper

PORT HASTINGS- A local canal saw an increase in traffic this year.
The Canso Canal closed on December 24 at the end of the 2013 shipping season. The canal closes every December due to ice in the Northumberland Strait and reopens the following April.

In terms of traffic in the canal last year, a press release from the Maritimes branch of Fisheries and Oceans Canada confirmed 1,501 ships passed through carrying over 666,386 tonnes of cargo, which is registered before any vessel enters the canal. The bulk of the cargo was quarried materials and fish products.

Trigiani open to debate on war memorial monument in Green Cove

New Marine Atlantic ferry terminal in North Sydney. The quality of these photos in pretty low, they were taken through the windows of the MV Blue Puttees while it was docking. It looks like the steel structure is nearly built, so it should really start taking shape over the summer.

Edit: Thought I was in the Sydney thread for some reason. Not that this is totally out of place here, but the other thread would have been more accurate. Apologies.

Was reading about this yesterday. Amazing news! I wonder if anyone has information on the proposed route?

Edit: After looking a little closer it seems like they will probably have to chip seal quite a bit of provincial access road like little Salmon River Rd, and Creek Rd if they are going to connect the two areas.

Visited the Jost family's newest endeavor: the Tatamagouche Brewing Company. They have two kinds of beer and both are awesome. It's worth the drive out.

Same can be said for Uncle Leo's in Lyon's Brook (just outside Pictou).

I have no insider info, but I recently visited the parkway and did a little exploring, and then hopped on my ATV and visited the entire uncompleted section, and it certainly looks like it will be chipsealed for the most part from here on in.
Either way, nice to get it done. We can worry about putting down actual pavement later.
If you look on their web site, the route for the last section is on a map there. I'm disappointed that, for the most part, the road will be inland and not along the coast. But oh well. Still well worth the drive. If you haven't visited it yet, pack a picnic lunch and enjoy. You will be glad you did.

I see that the federal government has committed $10M in funding for infrastructure projects in Fundy National Park. Roughly half of this is for roadway improvements, which will jive nicely with the soon-to-be-completed Fundy Trail Parkway.

I can't wait for this to happen - New Brunswick's own personal version of the Cabot Trail, only not so remote and a nice little drive between the province's two largest cities. This will be a huge success when it finally opens in 2018 (or hopefully sooner).
