Xanadu has a little of the same cladding scheme as 157.

This very tower (from this very angle) is what got me interested in skyscrapers in the first place. Very cool.

I too am a bit puzzled by the dark top panels, BUT, we have not yet seen it lit. The dark "spine" on 57'th, as well as the slite structural texture of the sides, bringing weight/stiffness to the rear, "MAY" compliment a hard cap, rooster style, which could bring extreme lightness, and width to the front portion. (Apparent width enhanced by the 2 side light panels.) In the Portz man i trust.

Good point. I'll wait and see. Perhaps these darker panels will look cool when the top is illuminated.

I didn't mean it as a compliment, but to each their own. It's a lovely tower regardless.

A PBS series on "Super Skyscrapers" will feature One57 on part 4 next month....

Quote:
SUPER SKYSCRAPERS -- Wednesdays, February 5-26, 2014, 10:00-11:00 p.m. ET -- As urban space shrinks, we build higher and faster than ever before, creating a new generation of skyscrapers. Super skyscrapers are pushing the limits of engineering, technology and design to become greener, stronger, smarter and more luxurious than their predecessors. This four-part series follows the creation of four extraordinary buildings, showcasing how they will revolutionize the way we live, work and protect ourselves from potential threats.

"The Billionaire Building" on Super Skyscrapers airs on Wednesday, February 26th at 9 pm

Quote:
Upon completion, One57, on Manhattan’s 57th Street, will rise more than 1,000 feet, making it the tallest residential tower in the western hemisphere and boasting spectacular views of Central Park. “One57” follows the teams tasked with creating New York’s most luxurious residential skyscraper and their ambition to redefine luxury living the big city. Condominiums at One57 showcase state-of-the-art interiors — double-height ceilings, full-floor apartments, bathrooms clad in the finest Italian marble and the finest material finishes.

This will be interesting, to say the least.

I was driving down Victory Blvd here on Staten Island and (of course) I looked at the skyline from on top of the hill. I noticed the very tip of One57 was reflecting far brighter than anything else in Manhattan. Mind you that's a good 10 miles away.

Couldn't stop to take a picture without hurting someone, sorry.

On sunny days, it is very bright. You can't help but notice it.

^Nice Pics. What's the name of the building in the foreground with the awesome crown and the flag on top?

Fun fact: 320 park and the building to it's right were "twins" at one point!

Sometime in the 90's the building was reclad and got it's height extended. If I'm correct the zoning in this particular area allows buildings to be added on, but if they were torn down completely the new structure would have to be smaller. (I saw a thread on here about another proposal for park Ave -forgot the name - that involves tearing down another building partially and building up from there for that very reason.) EDIT: HERE IT IS

That weird zoning quirk is set to be resolved in that "midtown rezoning plan" that's been proposed....

Sorry for going OT just want to try and clear that up

Yes, thanks from me too!

I worked at 270 Park in the 80s and that building looked so "foreign" to me.
