Miami looks like 'crane" city again in that last pic! This project looks massive!

Developers choose East hotel brand for Brickell CityCentre

BY HANNAH SAMPSON
HSAMPSON@MIAMIHERALD.COM

After receiving interest from several hotel companies, Swire Properties announced that the mixed-use Brickell CityCentre complex will get a brand developed by its Swire Hotels affiliate.

The 236-room East, Miami will be the first East hotel in the United States. Two other locations are in Hong Kong and Beijing. The hotel will also include 89 serviced apartments, two restaurants, meeting space and a rooftop bar.

Brian Williams, managing director of Swire Hotels, described East as an “upper midscale lifestyle brand.” Rates, he said, would be set below Mandarin Oriental, Miami, which Swire Properties developed and still has majority interest in.

For the hotel, developers had a choice of 10 upscale brands, said Swire Properties President Stephen Owens. He said the East brand was a good fit.

“It has a sort of dynamic energy that we thought would really complement what we’re doing at Brickell CityCentre,” Owens said.

Vertical construction on the $1.05 billion development west of Brickell Avenue and south of the Miami River is set to begin in September. The hotel is set to be finished by the third quarter of 2015.

Question, what type of soil does Miami generally sit on?

Porous Limestone right below the surface which makes underground construction like this pretty complicated. I'm not sure what method Swire eventually went with but they were testing freezing the ground to keep the water out while they excavated the garage.

According to this article the "Miami Oolite Formation" upon which South Florida is built on (elevated above the Everglades to the west) is composed of limestone, sandstone and quartz sand. Basically South Florida is an exposed ancient sea bed.

Thanks for that, it looks like a type of coral limestone, that's why I ask. I was pretty close I guess.

curious from the locals -

I see a lot of commentary about Miami's lack of walkability (in comparison to NYC, Boston, etc). Will this project help streetlife? walkability?

Compared to the large fenced off grass fields that were there before... Of course it'll help. Adding more office space and retail to downtown (destinations)... of course it'll help.

Will it be NYC or Boston? No.

Swire In Talks To Add Macy’s To Brickell CityCentre

Swire Properties has held talks with Macy’s as a potential anchor department store at Brickell CityCentre, Swire President Stephen Owens told Miami Today.

Macy’s has expressed dissatisfaction with it’s current downtown location.

Owens told the paper that no deal had been reached, and that Macy’s is also likely in talks with developers of other planned retail centers in Dade County.

Some verticality at the BCC site (could be a word). The first tower is up above street level now:
