I was hoping someone on the thread might be familiar with this area and know the history of this building. It's been bugging me
ever since I came across it a week or so ago.

The address seems to be 1436 Goodrich Boulevard. The aerial below captures the building nearing completion in 1948. That date is confirmed by www.propertyshark.com. Triggs Street appears to have been added to the intersection when the nearby Santa Ana Freeway was constructed a couple of years after this aerial was taken.

The building was apparently apartments earlier in its life. I remember it as being the Pacific Evangelical United Bretheren Home for the Aged in the 50's and 60's. It was located in on East Cypress Avenue on the northwest side of the street, between Glenoaks and Third streets. I find another postcard from later on which gives the address as 361 E. Cypress. The building was torn down in about 1974 or so and a larger, more modern apartment complex for elderly people was built, which now covers the entire block between Cypress and Harvard Road. My first job was to write letters, checks and things for a woman who resided in the home and was no longer able to hold a pen. This was in the late 60's.

I see the postmark on the back of the picture you posted is 1921

You do find the best random shots, ER-- These are great views of two just-finished spec houses built in Pellissier Square by Andrew Getty in addition to his own a block and a half north at the southwest corner of Wilshire and Hobart. (Btw, Andrew Getty was unrelated to other Wilshire Boulevard Gettys.) The story of that house (651 South Hobart) is in the works here:

Mrs. Esther Greenwald was found murdered by her husband Maurice (49) around 6 pm August 19, 1957 at 4020 Holly Knoll Drive.

The front and back doors were both locked. Esther (born October 5, 1904) is lying face-down across the hallway with her head in a pool of blood on the bedroom floor and her feet in the bathroom. She's wearing a blue nightgown, gray housecoat and red slippers and has been strangled with the cord from her housecoat. She's wearing two diamond rings.

Dr. Gerald K. Ridge, the medical examiner, says that death occurred sometime between 1:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.

In her bedroom her diamond wrist watch is on the dresser and there's a fur stole in the closet. Robbery does not appear to be a motive.

Her husband, Maurice stated that they had gone to the airport to see off some relatives who were flying to Hawaii the night before. They stopped somewhere for bagels and coffee, and didn't get home until 2 a.m. or 3 a.m. Maurice left for work at about 7:15 am.

The inquest will find enough evidence to make him criminally responsible for the strangulation of his wife Esther. Maurice snarled, "Now they will make a captain out of you!" to Lt. Herman Zander homicide detective as he was arrested. Maurice apparently turned on the heating unit in their house to make determining time of death difficult.

A jury found Maurice not guilty. He was born November 6, 1907 in New York, died August 11, 1982 in San Bernardino, California.

I guess we're at 1st Street below Grand Avenue. The hill is being leveled between Olive and Hill Streets. Very noirish picture never seen on the thread which could well start a film noir if it was in motion... Maybe I'm thinking of "The Asphalt Jungle" which starts with a car climbing 1st Street on the same section.

Historic Aerials

The buildings on the left top corner of the aerial picture are Burbank High School. The curved street is Harvard Road. The straight street to the left of that was the bottom part of Grinnell Drive but it was taken out when the school property was expanded. It now starts up again below the High School and runs past IKEA.

I'd be surprised if the location of these shots was actually even near the intersection of Wilshire & McCadden. Hancock Park houses are generally much bigger than those in the pictures. The picture below is indeed of Wilshire & McCadden, looking southeast. (The gabled house was at the SE corner of Wilshire & Longwood, not in Hancock Park proper, but of the general size of HP houses.) The image was lumped with those of the children in one of several batches on the USC site illustrating traffic hazards and solutions...the now-closed subway entrances are seen on either side of Wilshire here.
