Place Royale would be nicer in color, that's a bit of a waste!

That ship is massive. I know there is one about that size that docks throughout the summer in Vancouver but the passengers on that are probably at least 1/3 Vancouverites or from the lower mainland and also that many people visiting would go unnoticed. A ship like that in Halifax would be almost 100% out if towers. That must be such a winfall for local business.

^ Now that is one hell of a ship. If even half of the passengers get off, attractions like Pier 21 and the Citadel must get swamped with visitors.

Well anytime I was in central areas since perhaps May, it's been impossible to make it a block without seeing people standing on the corner taking pics of something or other, or way-finding with the GPS. I wouldn't say it's all cruise ships though based on the number of out of town license plates around. In the offseason you'll typically see about 50% NS, 40% NB, and only 10% everything else, but in the summer it's around 35% NS, 30% NB, 25% Ont and 10% other (mostly QC, and NE US).

Seems like it's been a pretty good year for visitors.

That one ship carries over 4,000 passengers. Last year, on the busiest day, there were more than 10,000 cruise ship passengers in the port. This season they are expecting about 240,000 in total (apparently Vancouver is expecting 830,000 this year).

They must have a large impact on the touristy areas but then again there are a lot of spots for tourists to visit. A lot of them seem to spend most of their time wandering along the waterfront boardwalk, which is about 4 km long. It's big enough that even if there are thousands of passengers they don't end up in one giant blob. I'm assuming they have a way of letting the passengers off in stages.

The military ships and tall ships are interesting too. I remember a number of years back when the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle was in port. This year the Mexican tall ship Cuauhtemoc visited. It's interesting to see hundreds of Colombian or Italian sailors wandering around downtown (often in uniform).

Thanks for sharing!!

This last pic of Edmonton is perhaps the ugliest one I've ever seen though. and with the EPCOR monstrosity in the foreground it doesn't help.

Can't wait to see the transformation in Edmonton once the Stantec towers go up! It should catapult Edmonton into easy top 5 skyline ranking in Canada.

My brother used to do customs for cruise ships in Vancouver and I think your "1/3 local" number is very high. It's almost all Americans going to Alaska and you can feel the city change when one of those things unloads.

True but imagine a ship that size unloading in a city the size of Halifax.
