glad you seem to think so, but casting the implicit racism of that post aside, I saw way more greeks, arabs, old-school white folks and hipsters of every sort, than I did mexicans. Astoria is becoming more diverse, but it's not the barrio. Just look at the stores.

anyway, the viaduct leading up to the Hell Gate looks pretty cool too, if anyone has pictures of that. It is a train line elevated over the street

A small part of Boston's green line used to be elevated next to North Station.

I thought it was awesome but it was torn down a while back. Bah.

Scuse me as well for adding my 2 cents but I don't know what f__king Astoria he's been in but I am a regular on Ditmars around the 20's and It's plennnnnnnnnnnnty Greek. Infact there is a huge Greek Orthidox Church right next to my brothers apartment. The area is not a barrio it's young people and greeks with a rather diverse population otherwise.. Tip to buildctplace... Stay in Ct, thanks.

These pics of Boston's old Mainline El on Washington St are from the Library of Congress. Props to justin from archboston for discovering these gems.

You'd be hard pressed to find Boston looking this shabby today. Although it would be "cool" if the El still existed, there's no question that the South End was in pretty bad shape back then.

The Frankford Ave El in Philly scares the hell out of me when I drive along it. You dont see any sun and the neighborhood is horrible.

I am waiting to have the ducky boys from the Wanderers come out and attack me when I am under that thing.

btw what the hell is that thing in Germany it looks like a roller coaster ride lol.

San Frans looks nice and somewhat modern.

must see: 10 minute film riding the 3rd avenue el in Manhattan in 1950, in COLOR:

http://www.archive.org/stream/ThirdA...1950_256kb.mp4

EDIT: right click, select "save link as" and watch it in quicktime after youve downloaded it. If you stream it it plays in a very small window.

Most elevated train lines in Tokyo run beside roads with shops built into the support structure. But here are a couple shots where they don't.
The Toneri Line monorail, which has been under construction for a few years now.

Two other train lines running under it:

Here is the Tokyo Monorail and part of the Shuto expressway running underneath an elevated freight line.

Volguus:

has anyone ever raised the idea of using these things for some sort of light feature, like Freemont Street in Vegas? I think the Loop in Chicago could pull something like that off.

Yes, this is an el, just modern. And sorry, this isn't exactly under the rail, but it's the closest I could find right now.

LITZ, I doubt very seriously such thought has been given to anything like that beyond any application of general lighting for public safety. I certainly haven't heard anything.

I attended another one of those community meetings this week as the Market Street El project gets ready for another spring/summer/fall of work. Lighting (and streetscaping, surprise surprise) are elements being looked at and tinkered with as the project comes closer to completion. I wouldn't count on anything beyond the practical (particularly for a cash strapped transit agency in a city with increasingly less money to spend on such things) but keep hope alive.

Chicago is kind of planning that with the Wabash Avenue renovations

Corn! I kid, this is at the last station in Illinois. When NYC built its EL, it also bult over cornfields. Later, those cornfields became dense urban neighborhoods. I guess it would be too much to expect.

OK, LITZ, here’s some from Berlin.

As you see to the left in ths pic there are often restaurants, shops and stuff located under the rail. For example...

...a book store...

...and a restaurant.
